New Einstein Smart Meter Ad

This advert now showing says ‘we can save 70 million trees’ if we all get a smart meter’
The CGI looks like Einstein I know not relevant but I’m bothered a lot by this ad
It isn’t clear what body is promoting this claim and I would like to know how they’d prove this tree saving
Bearing in mind the utility providers are relentless in their quest to get everyone on a smart meter
I just find it outrageous that they are now playing the save the trees’ card
Is there any way they can prove this claim about the ‘70 million trees’ …sorry I may not have explained this correctly

I don’t understand how a smart meter could save anything - I turn things on if I need to use them, and turn things off if I don’t 🤷‍♀️

Exactly
I REFUSE to get one
Quite happy to submit my readings in my app
But how am I killing trees ?

YANBU. I am so pissed off with the constant nagging to switch to a smart meter. They will benefit me in NO way, and I will NOT get one.

They can piss off trying to bully and coerce me into getting one... The more they nag and go on at me to get one, the more I am determined NOT to get one.

My energy provider started off with the cheery (but slightly pushy) 'you can switch to a smart meter now. Just ring us to book your slot....... ' NOW they are sending letters out saying 'YOU ARE DUE A SMART METER. BOOK YOUR APPOINTMENT NOW!' The letter now has a much more aggressive tone, and is implying that you have no choice.

They can feck off. Hmm

Oh and yeah, switching to a smart meter makes fuck-all difference to the planet's trees!

FFS. Hmm

Why don't you want one out of interest

Yep
They are turning into corporate stalkers - I have had to block SSE from my phone but can still see they ring me
I just want somebody to actually PROVE how we can save ‘70 million trees’
If they can’t then surely that is false advertising and should be withdrawn

Why don't you want one out of interest

I have perfectly good meters already - so it’s not environmentally friendly to replace something which works.
And I don’t want an ugly display unit which will consume more electricity unnecessarily

I'm not sure how they have come up with this claim. We had smart meters installed last week but I haven't bothered charging up on using the home display that comes with them.

I'd drive myself round the bend knowing what I'm spending money on. It has stayed in the box in the misc cupboard. Fortunately the energy provider can use the smart meters to take readings themselves, without me having to look at the home display unit.

@nannannanana
I don’t want one because they’re trying to force one on me and there is no benefit to me

But….
If they could show me how I could just save ‘one tree’ I may consider it

It's more along the lines of scrutinising your bills. Looking at your consumption for gas and electricity.

I have a display in the cupboard so I can see it jump up when things are on.

It does make me think more about doing full loads rather than half in the washing machine etc. Making sure I have turned the heating off when not needed etc.

It will not automatically make you savings you have to monitor your behaviour then act on it. I.e turning the heating off, turning lights off, smart plugs with timers etc etc.

@nannannanana
Thanks
Yes I have been a little bit over invested so I have seen the ad a few times and I get what they are saying…My interpretation
It’s if we all were more aware of what power we are consuming by referring to the smart meter then we may cut back - which I do understand how some - not everyone - would perhaps cut back but my point is they can’t possibly put a hard and fast figure on that can they ?
I pay a lot for electricity being in a single household and I am constantly aware of not to waste it but I don’t need a smart meter to tell me not to leave lights on in every room for instance …
So it is quite misleading, don’t get me wrong everyone would benefit from being aware but they cannot legitimately state that they C02 emissions would equal 70 million trees as they just don’t know

I'm not sure how they have come to that figure. I work in this industry.

It's the industrial sector I work in so I understand it more from that point of view snd there are some good case studies I have seen but nothing for domestic properties. I have to admit I dont scrutinise my own bills. I am more aware of turning things off and I have monitored more since getting a hot tub. It costs pennies to run when it's at the desired temperature but it pushes us up to about 42p an hour whilst it's getting there which takes about a day.

As we have to move towards net zero this all feeds into it.

Suppliers have targets to meet in how much of the uk is covered with a smart meter. Hence the push if you refuse.

That’s so interesting Thank you
It’s the relentless push that makes me suspicious and I have read that the utility providers are stuck with outdated readers which they want to offload - is this correct do you think ?

The main convenience is no longer needing to read your meters. They are physically altered / updated and equipped with a sim card so that they send the readings back to base every week. This was 4 years ago for me and still ticking over fine.

There are no real benefits apart from that. Like others said, the smart meter just makes you aware of how much you're using. Any changes are changes that you make yourself e.g. putting less water in the kettle.

I'm going back into domestic soon.

If people wouldn't mind, can you help me with some insight please? It will just be a presentation at this point but with Some general feedback from actual real life people with real actual comments about why smart meters are not for them.

I know I could take comments from here anonymously but i absolutely wouldn't. I'd rather get genuine concerns from people like me.

Would anyone like to submit a comment or a
Question?

I will of course share any feedback
