To think the school should hear DS version of events as well as teachers?

DS2 has come home today to say he has got a detention next week for some bad behaviour in a lesson yesterday. The story according to DS is .. A sub teacher was covering a lesson as the usual teacher is off with Covid and had not left any work for the class. The sub tcouldn't find any work for the class who have taken advantage of this and have been messing about. Different groups of kids have misbehaved to different levels. DS says he was chatting to his friends and messing about at the back of the class including getting up to look for stuff his friend had hidden. Some of the other lads were chucking stuff around and some were making what the sub said were racist comments. The sub understandably has become very upset and called in another teacher at the end of the lesson who gave the whole class a warning and made them apologise. This morning a section of the class were called into to see their HOY and the deputy head to discuss the incident. They were told that the sub had written an account of what happened and passed it to the head. As a result of this some of the kids have been suspended, some put into isolation and the others (including DS) have been given a detention. DS was made to write an apology letter to give to the teacher. Now if what DS has said is true that's all fine. DS behaved badly and I have no quibble with him receiving punishment. My AIBU is when the deputy head was speaking to them and she told them about the letter the sub wrote the class were told she (deputy head) was not interested in hearing their side of the story because she believed the teacher over them. I just feel uncomfortable with that as I feel like everyone should have a right to defend themselves with their version of events. DS would have said yes he behaved badly, but not as badly as the children he had been lumped in with. Several children doing what DS was have recieved no punishment. DS is not sure what has put him in the punishment group rather than not but he didn't really dare ask after being told they weren't interested in their version. So AIBU to think the school should have let the kids give their version even if they then didn't believe it? And also AIBU to email the deputy head and ask her for the schools version of what happened and why DS has recieved this specific punishment?
