To ask the school for a refund?

Dd was supposed to go on a school trip last Friday. She couldn't go as she was really ill. Aibu to ask for a refund? I paid £22 for travel and entry to event.

No where on the letter did it say the price was non refundable but I still don't know if I should ask for it back.

I don't think the school will have the money to give you as they will have bought her ticket and space on the coach.

Yep YABU. The school would have paid for x amount of entries and x amount of coaches based on the children who had paid - they won't have kept the money.

Sorry but YABU. The cost of the travel and entry to the event will have been paid in advance. The school won't have been refunded for these, so they wouldn't be able to pass on the money to you even if they wanted to.

They would have paid for all the coach travel, entry etc in advance and one less child wouldnt have given them a discount on the coach. Maybe you would get a refund on the entry price, if they did pay on the day, but usually that would be paid in advance too.

No you shouldn't ask for it back. That money would have paid for the bus and they wont get a refund for that or the entry fee

The school wont have the money, the coach and venue will have been paid in advance. They will have insurance but I expect the excess will make a claim non viable.

I suppose you could try and insist ut it will mean the money co es out of the school budget. I cant imagine many parents would want to do that.

You realise that they have to book in advance for trips? That the coach has to be pre booked and paid for as will the venue. They wont have just rocked up on the day and paid admission.

If the school does give you a refund, and they may well say they're unable to, it will come out their own budget. For that reason, you shouldn't ask. It's not like anyone will have profited out of your dd not going, and you've already said goodbye to the money.

You go to Tesco on Monday. You buy a piece of fish with a use by date of Saturday. On Saturday, you feel a bit under the weather, don't want to cook, so order a takeaway. On Sunday you go to Tesco and ask for your money back because you didn't use the fish after all.

Some events you absolutely can pay on the door but the coach 100% will have been pre-aranged.

Did the school only allow a set number of students to attend this event?

I would ask but I wouldn't expect a refund.

I used to work in a school and we did refund for trips in some cases. Often the entry is paid on a per head basis on the day - though sometimes it’s a flat rate. Transport is trickier as we calculate it based on the number of children eligible to go on the trip. Also we didn’t want people to delay paying in case their child was ill. Trips where parents don’t pay are a real drain on resources for a school. My children’s school for more expensive trips asks parents if they will donate in advance and if they don’t get enough responses don’t run the trip.

School will have pre-booked every ticket for children and adults. The coach will have been a fixed total price divided up. Both elements will have been paid out already.

Look at the letter if you still have it, some precise the fee is non refundable as the tickets are booked and paid in advance.

There's absolutely no harm in asking politely if any element of it is able to be refunded.

Every school trip I arranged was based on our full pre-payment for the coach (so not refundable) and an estimated number of pupils and adults for the admission fee, with the actual number paid for on the day (so refundable).

For some attractions or larger groups, our ticket arrangement might not have been possible though, so be prepared for a no on that, too.

For the record, I wouldn't have seen a polite enquiry such as yours as a 'that parent' thing at all.
