To serve my children sandwiches made from two slices of bread

A picture on Twitter just reminded me of this, Sainsbury’s cafe has changed the sandwiches for kids to just one slice of bread. They are two very small triangles, barely fill the palm of my hand. The slice they use is probably an economy or basic loaf as it’s noticeably thinner and smaller than my usual bread.

From about three I’ve given my kids two slices (standard size loaf, Sainsbury’s use a smaller one) and they mostly finish them. My active 9 yr old occasionally has a third if famished after sport.

My kids are on the shorter side and two bordering on underweight (not just saying that, centiles 3 and 5 on the Nhs bmi calculator when I just checked) so I’m surprised if we’re eating more than the norm.

We haven’t been back my my son ate the sandwich when we went there in four easy bites.

Do most people feed their kids in a packed lunch etc a full sandwich? I usually give a sandwich and a piece of fruit as a normal primary school sized lunch. Sometimes a small extra too, but not always. To me it was a toddler lunch...

i give my kids aged 7, 5 and 3 sandwiches made from 1 piece of bread ie half a round. i use homemade bread that is much more substantial than supermarket style bread.

@livingthegoodlife I probably would for thick bread or rye bread etc. This is that super thin stuff with no real substance

It depends on the bread! My 3 year old eats loads though (very tall and skinny and active) so I’d usually give him 2 slices of regular sliced bread.

Mine has one slice on morning break with a piece of fruit and one slice at lunch time with another piece of fruit

My four year old has two slices yes. He has always loved bread.

Not overweight.

Sainsburys sandwiches are stingy.

I always use two slices of bread for nearly 3 year old but she refuses to eat crust. Yesterday she ate nearly 4 slices worth of sandwiches but that is far from her usual norm.

It depends what else they eat that day.

7 year old gets 2 slices.
4 year old gets one.

My 3 year old will eat 2-4 triangles, so 1 or 2 slices of (substantial) bread.
4 yo loves sandwiches, we had to get her a second round of sandwiches when at a cafe at the weekend (loads of tuna filling in and came with a few salad bits too!) so that’s 4 pieces of substantial bread.

4 yo is slightly underweight. No way would 2 small triangles keep her going.

Since they changed the sandwiches DS6 has refused to eat there. He was aghast Grin

I think with the lunches it's because that meal comes with fruit, crisps, yoghurt, and a drink - if they served it with a normal sized sandwich it would be well over 500 calories (probably too much for the age range they're aiming at but I'm not a dietician).

They do serve other (hot) kids meals if you want something more substantial.

I feed my DS 1 slice folded - he's only 13 months though.

Depends what else I’m giving alongside the sandwich. At our local Sainsbury’s cafe the kids sandwiches come in a picnic bag which is a couple of quid and contains the small sandwich as you describe, but also fruit, crisps, yoghurt and drink. I think that’s plenty of food for most preschoolers. But at home I might only be giving a sandwich and piece of fruit, in which case I would give 2 rounds of normal “medium” sliced bread.

Have they halved the price at the same time...?

I guess I only buy the sandwich and a drink, I’m not a fan of the sugary yogurt or loading on crisps and all the flavourings in the picnic bags. I’d rather the other half of a sandwich than snacks. The fruit in ours I always a bit rough too, we get some from the shop floor.

It just a cracking point after the worlds slowest service I think for us

My 7 year old has 1 slice of bread for lunch.

But she’s not overly into bread and prefers wraps.

My 3 and 5 year olds have 2 slides of bread in a sandwich. Only my 3 year old has a packed lunch and I give her a sandwich (2 slices of bread)or 2 wraps, a pot of grapes/blueberries, an apple or a banana and a yoghurt/ maltloaf/baby bel. She eats almost all of it. Some of her preschool friends have even more than that. I also give them 2 slices of toast if they have beans or scrambled eggs on toast.

I do give her a yogurt, some strawberries and some cheese as well though

I thought you meant a nothing sandwich :)
My dc are older and have two or sometimes four!!

My 3.5 year old would have 1 slice, plus other stuff like fruit and a yoghurt. 6 year old would eat 2 slices. 9 year old: depends on the mood but between 3 and 6 slices. Yes, really!

Always two slices. A one slice sandwich would be okay for a snack for a younger child.

This is MN there are some on here that think sandwiches are devil food and that giving your child a sandwich (or 2) equates to child abuse. My kids dont have sandwiches often (they prefer wraps) but if they have them they have 2 slices and leave the crusts

My five year old would eat a two slicer no problem. M&S have recently made their kids sandwich in the cafe smaller as well. It used to be four pieces in a packet but now there is only three. My five year old is very put out

I'd not patronise a stingy cafe like that.

I think that kids meals are hard to get right as they cater for 1-12 year olds which is a massive difference in appetite and nutritional needs. In schools 4 year olds get the same portion as 11 year olds.

My kids would eat a 2 slice sandwich but having read posts on here, the 1 slice sandwich kids would have fruit, some veg, yoghurt and other bits and pieces.
