To think the word ‘paedo’ is minimising and inappropriate

And I wish MN would ban it.

MJ was a child sex offender, not a ‘paedo’.

Paedo = paedophile. Someone who has sex with children fits the description and seems pretty accurate where he is concerned. Don't see the problem or need for a ban.

Can't see the issue. We all know what it means and how serious it is.

It makes you sound like a news of the world reader and it minimises a serious issue in the same way ‘child porn’ and ‘kiddie fiddler’ do.

How can calling someone a "paedo" be minimizing? I think it is a very serious thing to call someone that.

Report
ColeHawlins · 13/03/2019 15:54

No, it's not minimising or inappropriate in the way "kiddyfiddler" is.

The FBI investigated Michael Jackson for ten (that's 10) years. They concluded he was a victim of extortion and lies. Are you now trying to put over that you have done more research than the FBI... ?

Because the correct word is ‘paedophile.’

By adopting casual and informal language it suggests a casual and informal approach.

To you maybe. Not to anyone else.

Because it's a straightforward abbreviation.

I agree that it is slangy and a bit tabloid, but it doesn't minimise.

Report
Chouetted · 13/03/2019 15:59

It's an abbreviation. Most people can't spell paedophile.

Is it minimising to call pediatrics paeds? Because my impression is that I see that just as much as "paedo".

I don't think it's necessarily minimising and I really don't think we should ban words.

If I think anything about the word, it's that it sounds a bit stupid out of the mouth of an adult. To me it's something teenagers would shout.

Paedophile *

What is a horrible word is "child porn" and "animal porn" it should automatically be called child abuse/rape videos and animal abuse/rape videos

Report
User07734 · 13/03/2019 16:03

Sex offender is as bad as "child porn" if you think about it. Child rapist and images of child abuse is accurate if you're going to be pedantic.

Purplejay · 13/03/2019 16:29

I don’t think paedo is minimising. If I see it, my mind will think paedophile.

IncrediblySadToo · 13/03/2019 16:32

Don’t be ridiculous.

It’s an abbreviation, that’s all
MN are not about to start banning perfectly ordinary words because you think it’s not formal enough. FFS.

Most people can't spell 'Paedophile'.

'Kiddy fiddler' is on a different level - Daily Sport readers spring to mind.

Mn will definitely never ban abbreviations can you imagine!

Report
ScreamingValenta · 13/03/2019 16:42

I'm not keen on it because you often read of it being used by paedophiles themselves, as a self-description they've embraced.

I'd agree with you normally. But paedophilia is a different thing. It's so heinous, mainstream culture thinks it's never ok . The police, court system, social services, prison officers, even jail mates - they all reserve a special contempt and horror for crimes against children. It's not like racism or sexism where every other person who meet indulges in it privately or openly.
