To think the word ‘paedo’ is minimising and inappropriate

And I wish MN would ban it.

MJ was a child sex offender, not a ‘paedo’.

Paedo = paedophile. Someone who has sex with children fits the description and seems pretty accurate where he is concerned. Don't see the problem or need for a ban.

ColeHawlins Wed 13-Mar-19 15:52:15

Can't see the issue. We all know what it means and how serious it is.

continuallychargingmyphone Wed 13-Mar-19 15:52:25

It makes you sound like a news of the world reader and it minimises a serious issue in the same way ‘child porn’ and ‘kiddie fiddler’ do.

sonjadog Wed 13-Mar-19 15:52:47

How can calling someone a "paedo" be minimizing? I think it is a very serious thing to call someone that.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking Wed 13-Mar-19 15:54:01

ha .... let me get his one in the local paper today

'nonce' in a headline FFS

ColeHawlins Wed 13-Mar-19 15:54:00

No, it's not minimising or inappropriate in the way "kiddyfiddler" is.

The FBI investigated Michael Jackson for ten (that's 10) years. They concluded he was a victim of extortion and lies. Are you now trying to put over that you have done more research than the FBI... ?

continuallychargingmyphone Wed 13-Mar-19 15:55:24

Because the correct word is ‘paedophile.’

By adopting casual and informal language it suggests a casual and informal approach.

continuallychargingmyphone Wed 13-Mar-19 15:55:42

Why cole?

Why isn’t it?

sonjadog Wed 13-Mar-19 15:56:14

To you maybe. Not to anyone else.

ColeHawlins Wed 13-Mar-19 15:56:54

Because it's a straightforward abbreviation.

I agree that it is slangy and a bit tabloid, but it doesn't minimise.

Chouetted Wed 13-Mar-19 15:59:25

It's an abbreviation. Most people can't spell paedophile.

Is it minimising to call pediatrics paeds? Because my impression is that I see that just as much as "paedo".

Nonce is better, makes people say 'what does that mean' A dirty FUCKING pedophile that is what a Nonce is!!!

User07734 Wed 13-Mar-19 16:01:29

I don't think it's necessarily minimising and I really don't think we should ban words.

If I think anything about the word, it's that it sounds a bit stupid out of the mouth of an adult. To me it's something teenagers would shout.

HJWT Wed 13-Mar-19 16:01:58

Paedophile *

Bellasorellaa Wed 13-Mar-19 16:02:26

What is a horrible word is "child porn" and "animal porn" it should automatically be called child abuse/rape videos and animal abuse/rape videos

User07734 Wed 13-Mar-19 16:03:29

Sex offender is as bad as "child porn" if you think about it. Child rapist and images of child abuse is accurate if you're going to be pedantic.

Purplejay Wed 13-Mar-19 16:29:15

I don’t think paedo is minimising. If I see it, my mind will think paedophile.

IncrediblySadToo Wed 13-Mar-19 16:32:30

Don’t be ridiculous.

It’s an abbreviation, that’s all
MN are not about to start banning perfectly ordinary words because you think it’s not formal enough. FFS.

Most people can't spell 'Paedophile'.

'Kiddy fiddler' is on a different level - Daily Sport readers spring to mind.

User07734 Wed 13-Mar-19 16:38:39

Mn will definitely never ban abbreviations can you imagine!

ScreamingValenta Wed 13-Mar-19 16:42:25

I'm not keen on it because you often read of it being used by paedophiles themselves, as a self-description they've embraced.
