To feel like something else is going on with me.

Good morning, I'm prepared to be told that I should just listen to my doctor and get on with it but I just wanted to see what people's thoughts are. I am 30 and for months I've been absolutely exhausted. I stay home all day with my 4 year old daughter and 18 month old son and just work a couple of hours in the evening during the week. Only 10 hours a week. But everyday I wake up at a decent time but by midday I'm exhausted and can barely keep my eyes open. It's tirdness I have never felt before. By the time I'm home from work at 8pm, I need to climb into bed, regardless of whether I had a nap or not. Without fail I am asleep by 9pm. I've always been a bit of an insomniac. Most nights a wake up in a pool of sweat. I'm so hot, it's like there is a fire raging inside me. I've always been a cold person, so this is unusual for me. My husband has even noticed. By the time the morning comes, I can hardly move. I cry every morning trying to get out of bed because of how much my bones are hurting. It feels like every single bone is on a vice. From my arms to my legs, my spine to my ribs, my shoulders and hips. I have bone pain all day but it's more manageable once I'm up. I went to the doctor and they decided to do loads of blood tests. The results were that my thyroxine for the thyroid needed slightly adjusting, I had anaemia, slight b12 deficiency and vitamin D deficiency. He told me just to get some multi vitamins. Isn't there usually a reason you are deficient in these things? I think I'm just struggling to see past how crap I'm feeling and needed to write it all down. Thanks for sticking with me.

Reason can be diet, can be genetic ( likely a combination ) and not uncommon. Childbirths amd early years can delete resources. FIx the problem simply and safely. If there is anything else going on, the simple fix won’t work and you can go back.

Sounds typical vit d deficiency. My DD had it and was prescribed a large dose once a week. If you're deficient in Iron and b12 too it's no wonder you feel horrendous Flowers

Might you be pregnant? I remember feeling that way in early pregnancy.

Thank you. I'm pleased it sounds pretty typical, hopefully once the vits kick in, I'll feel much better.

Absolutely no chance of being pregnant. No more babies for me haha.

Go back to the Doctor, adjusting your Meds hasn't worked. You need bloods doing again.

A quick, armchair diagnosis could suggest Fibromyalgia.

But your bloods need repeating, to start with.

The combination of your thyroxine dose being wrong and the anemia could account for your tiredness, but your GP sounds dismissive. My GP would never tell me to just get some OTC vitamins if I'm anemic, she says they are practically useless. She always gives me a prescription. Can you see a different GP?

The one OTC iron supplement I've found that really works is Floradix, so if you do buy one try that first. If you cant get it make sure you take iron with vitamin C so you can absorb it.
Some nutrients are linked so if you are deficient in one it affects your absorption of the other. Vitamin D affects calcium uptake so you might need a calcium supplement as well.

Did they test you for peri menopause?

Have you had your thyroid checked? Sounds like hypo-thyroid which makes you feel so lethargic and sad and low. Easily remedied with monitoring. Get a blood test ASAP.

@Birdsgottafly they are retesting in 2 months.

@userschmoozer I'm not sure, there was a list of 10 things they tested for.

I’m also hot, exhausted and achy. I just assumed it was a side effect of having kids.

If your b and d levels weren't correct then a multi vitamin might not be enough and it needs to be carefully managed by a Dr.
Lol at the nice guidelines for low b12 and vit d then go back to your gp and ask for appropriate treatment

Do you have a coil fitted?

Your results explained how you feel. There doesn't have to be a reason. I came up low on Vit D even though I spend a lot of time outside, even in the winter. I didn't expect this at all but explained how I felt.

Sometimes the body doesn't absorb vitaminrs as well. In some cases, it can be due to a condition (pernicious anemia with low b12) but a lot of the time there isn't.

Thank you everyone, at least I know that it all sounds relatively normal. I will give it a few days to see how I respond to vitamins and my new meds and see how I feel.

Hi OP. 6 months ago I could have written this post myself. I had to have 10 vitB injections, up the thyroid meds and the nurse said everyone should be taking vitD. I take iron every day anyway (vegetarian). My doctor said one thing would be bad enough but it's the combination of all those things that makes you feel so crappy.

For both the Vit D and B12 the sprays you buy are much better absorbed than a multivitamin. I would take a really good multi Vit plus a B12 and Vit D spray.

Do you have a gas boiler? I had very similar symptoms, went to the doctors who found nothing wrong, but then we went into the loft to get something and found the boiler's vent pipe had been knocked off and the fumes were coming back into the house. When it was repaired my symptoms cleared up very quickly. Get a carbon monoxide tester if you don't already have one.

Could you be perimenopausal? Night sweats, exhaustion?

Apartment from the thyroid, all the deficiencies you mention can be treated without over the counter medication.

Have you checked out lymes disease ?

Report
swingofthings · 08/03/2019 08:16

It will take more than a few days to get better and you could actually feel worse, before you see an improvement. I'd give it 6 weeks minimum.

Take vitamin d3 as a seperate supplement. Never take calcium without magnesium. The blood test will measure calcium and right itself if you take vit d. Agree about flordix and it doesn't make you constipated. Berroca is not cheap but a good quick fix for b vitamins (always a b complex, never single b vitamin alone). Are your teeth and hair ok?

If you are very deficient in Vit D (what was the figure..?) then over the counter supplements will do bugger all. Your GP would need to give you a prescription for a 'loading dose' (e.g. 40,000) for a couple of months and then you could drop down to a maintenance dose suitable for you.

'Just get some multivitamins' is crap. They won't do anything. You need proper prescription strength iron, vit D and B12. I am prescribed vit D, worked out it's 8 times the dose of the ones I had bought from Boots. I'd go back and demand a prescription tbh. It's not ok to leave you feeling like this.
