If you had your brand new (expensive) iPad in your handbag, and called around to your friends house. Let’s say the bag was left on the worktop, out of reach of small hands.

Friends little girl some how managed to climb high enough to pull the bag down onto porcelain tiles, causing the bag to open and the iPad to slip out and smash on the ground. The child is 2.

It was an accident. Claim on the insurance. Or if was brand new and paid for by credit card, there might be 30 day purchase insurance.

I don't think I would ask the friend to pay for it, but tbh my friends would be a lot more apologetic rather than telling me what I should have done. Do you have it insured? If not insured then I think it would be acceptable to ask for a contribution but it doesn't sound like she will pay!

I think the owner of the bag bears all responsibility.

The bag and iPad were not out of reach, or protected.

A 2 year old is just a baby.

The iPad owner should try to claim on their own insurance.

The bag was out of reach, the child can somehow climb like a little ninja standing on the hands of the cupboard to reach up, as discovered today. 😭

If I was the friend think I'd offer to pay half but only if I could afford to. If I couldn't then I'd just be very apologetic.

Did the friend know you had an expensive ipad in your bag?
Do you or your friend have accidental insurance that would cover it?
Can friend afford to pay for insurance excess?

Yes she would have known, as I use it for work and was on my lunch break. I will check with her regarding insurance, I don’t have it insured! It is only a few days old and was meaning to get around to it.

I think she might just have been annoyed her little girl broke it and deflecting a little, it would be a lot of money to have to replace it, when it could have been prevented on my part but I don’t have children so didn’t see the need for a screen protector.
She is a really good friend usually.

How did the child manage to climb up? Was she not being supervised by your friend?

I have a 2yo and I would be mortified and claim on my insurance.
Generally as a parent you're aware of what your child gets up to so if said child is a climber then your friend should have warned you to move your bag.
My son likes to empty and fill bags so when my friend was round last weekend I warned her not to leave her bag on the floor as he was likely to try and empty it.
My son, my house, my responsibility.

@Fabaunt I don't think I would pay to replace it tbh you shouldn't of left your bag in the kitchen knowing it was in there not zipped up or protected, but at the same time, I wouldn't leave my 2 year old unattended or allow her to climb up my work tops managing to touch things high up, you know like knife sets so it wouldn't of happened anyway 😁

I think your friend should offer to pay for it to be repaired.
You left your bag out of her daughter's reach ( it's irrelevant that the bag was left open).
Your friend should have been supervising her daughter, not allowing her to climb on to work tops and emptying people's bags.

The bag had a flap over cover, which obviously opened when it fell so technically the bag was actually closed

Your friends reaction was crap, she should have apologised. However, it was your decision to bring your iPad around, when I could have been left securely and out of sight elsewhere. If your iPad is only a few days old and on contract, you can add insurance within 28 days. However, you can't claim until after 30 days. I'd recommend doing this if your friends isn't willing to help.
