No, my kids teachers always say a little bit about themselves at the start of the year. Totally normal.

Did you alert the village elders?

Not at all inappropriate. Being gay isn't a shameful secret that teachers should conceal.

would you posted if she would have said she has a husband? Confused

Well it is weird to tell anyone your sexuality without a context. I assume you have left out the context though.

Why would it be inappropriate?

Is it inappropriate when a female teacher mentions her boyfriend/husband to pupils? No. Then it's completely appropriate for her to mention her girlfriend/wife to her pupils. Hmm

I told some girls off for using gay in a derogatory fashion and said I was gay and didn’t appreciate my sexuality being used as an insult and was told off for it Hmm

Certainly not shameful, but can't see the need to. I don't think I've ever announced that I'm straight. Until now....!

Of course not! Most teachers will say a bit about themselves. E.g.. oh this weekend I went cycling with my husband. If it was wife it would make no difference.

I’m sure it was told in context, yes? Or came up in conversation and she said “my wife”.

I wouldn’t have a problem with it, nor would my kids.

When I did secondary teacher training in 1999 I mentioned to my university tutor that I lived with a woman. He must have immediately informed the school I was placed in and I was taken aside by a member of staff and told not to say anything to the pupils - can’t remember what her reasoning was! I had no intention of saying anything anyway but she was clearly very worried by this. I would hope things have changed a little since then.

nothing wrong with that at all.

DS went to a catholic high school. first day of orientation a teacher stood up and said "Most of us teachers have much-loved friends and family who are gay. if I ever hear anyone using that as a slur, you will be in a lot of trouble" The school had a gay pride club.
