AIBU?

Repealling the 8th

Casschops · 24/05/2018 20:01

This is going to be short, I won't say what my opinion is but as we are all aware Ireland will vote tomorrow to repeal the 8th amendment to relax abortion laws and to reduce the grip that is held by the church on the choices of women. I am not asking wether you agree or disagree with this so here is my AIBU: To ask if you feel as this is a womens issue and a decision that will affect the rest of her life is should men be allowed to vote? By allowing men to vote in this matter is this reinforcing that they too can have a say over what happens to a womans body? Or are we allowing men to exercise their democratic right to vote as a basic equal human right? Just wondered what your thoughts were?

My thoughts are - Repeal the 8th.

I think men should be allowed to vote yes but not allowed to vote no. Human rights for women are more important to me than democratic rights for men. I realise this is impossible....

I don't think you can restrict voting on the grounds that someone is less affected by the issue. The franchise should be equally available to all adults. So it has to be for everyone. FYI I would vote to repeal if I could.

Pointless aibu imo as men can vote. And yes it's about women but that also affects men - their wives, partners, sisters, daughters, etc.

What? Men should be allowed to vote but only if it's a yes?! Democracy at work there alright Grin

I am Irish and in Ireland. Whether men should vote or not is a moot point because they can, and tomorrow they will. The entire country of Irish people have the right to vote. Lets hope they vote correctly.

The reason why I was asking is that a friend will be voting tomorrow and not in Ireland so don't really know what the consensus of Irish voter's thoughts are on whether men should get to vote or not. I know opinions will differ. I'm just interested from a human perspective.

My three sons of voting age will be voting Yes tomorrow. I wouldn't want to deny them their vote.

People are interested in what people will vote, not what men will vote and what women will vote. This referendum is divisive enough without bringing gender divisions into it as well.

@jasperoonicle when do you reckon results will start coming in? I know the count begins on Saturday morning at 0900. I'm away and I really want to keep an eye on it.

iammargesimpson · 24/05/2018 20:21

Possibly sat afternoon for early counts? I think it'll be fairly tight, really unsure how this will go

Casschops - no consensus on who SHOULD vote because we cannot do anything about it.

@SlightAggrandising exit poll voting from LLS tomorrow night and then I would personally say from 4pm we could be getting counts in. I personally do not see more than a 50% turnout for it so it will significantly reduce time. That said, I don't care if it takes all month if we get our yes!

Exit poll at 11:30 on the Sat night Ryan Tubridy show.

Am anxious but hoping for a Yes!

I’ll be voting Yes

I'll be voting yes but I think if it gets through, it'll be by a tight margin, a lot if people I've spoken with are worried it'll open the floodgates and there will be abortion clinics set up.

Butterymuffin · 24/05/2018 21:12

Will the exit poll be reliable? I would imagine it'll be fraught with people not wanting to disclose their vote and they are difficult in very close run polls too.

Of course men should be able to vote.

If you have a vote, use it. Man or Woman. Just hope both have the sense to vote in favour of repealing.

Well - I'm 50 and no longer able to get pregnant so does that mean I shouldn't vote as the issue won't directly affect me? But it does give my 20 year old daughter the choices she needs if its passed - so her father should be able to vote too for that reason. (all three of us are passionate yes voters).

Hang on - I'm also hetrosexual so should I have not have voted in the same sex marriage referendum as after all its not an issue that will directly affect me? However - that one was an issue which directly affected my family as is the case for a lot of male voters in this referendum.

Therefore - yes men should be able to vote.

No it was just a question, friend in Ireland attends a debating group at the local library and this was what was discussed. She has put this all over facebook and has understandably had some reactions. Just wondered what people thought was all. Its nice to discuss things properly without it becoming a slanging match. Inkspellme- genuinely really good arguement, well argued and reasoned. Thank you :)

The referendum is a vote concerning the constitution of the republic. Of course every citizen should have a vote. From a purely procedural, democratic point of view the topic of the referendum isn’t relevant.

Of course men should be able to vote!

And I hope they will vote YES!

Everyone has a right to decide whether they want to become a parent.

Ireland has been hijacked by religion for too long!

Just Repeal the 8th. Me, DH and 4 dds will vote yes. My ds’s are not of age to vote. My dd will bring my mom to vote. My MIL ages 80 is voting to repeal.

I don;t think men should be voting because no one should be voting. The country should not be in a position to be deciding on womens personal choices, and the 8th amendment was an abhorrent pile of shit in 1983 and it still is now.

But since the happened and its a constitutional matter whether we like it or not, of course men have the same right to vote as women.

They just better fucking vote right. #togetherforyes
