AIBU?

AIBU To Email the Sender of an Invitation Not Addressed to Me?

Ok, first time on Mumsnet! Hello!

We moved into our house just over two years ago. For the past few Christmases we have received cards addressed to the previous occupants. There's never a return address on the envelope, so they go straight in the bin. Today a card came through the letter box with the envelope ripped open (the card was practically hanging out).

In it was a birthday invitation intended for the previous occupants. There's an RSVP email address. AIBU to email the sender, explaining what has happened and telling them the previous occupants are no longer living here? Or is that weird? I don't want them to think I open letters that aren't addressed to me, but then I'd want to know if I had the wrong address for a friend (although seeing they moved out in 2015, they can't be that close). Anyway, if someone could give me their thoughts, that would be ace.

Thanks all.

If you want to email, just say you opened it in error and thought you'd let them know they have the wrong address.

It doesn't matter if they think it's weird because you will never see them!

Don't put them in the bin, write gone away and put back in post box. Postal service open and return to sender if address inside.
In this case I would email sender and explain envelope already open

I'd email them. They may be grateful to know why their cards etc are ignored.

When we lived at a previous address we had a Christmas card that came every year. This went on for 12 years until they sent a card with their new address on.
So I sent the card back and stuck a note in to say the previous folks had moved 12 years previously

If the precious occupants haven’t updated them in two years, they probably aren’t bothered about going to their birthday party.

Ok, thanks all. I will email. In future, I'll stick the cards back in the post box. I didn't know the postal service opened and returned unopened post (if possible).

Yes just email them back..I've been in my house for 19 years (from new) and I still get at least half a dozen letters a year for next door but two. It boggles me it's still going on

We get one every year for the previous occupants and we've been here for 20 years!

I've taken to opening them in the last few years in the hope that there'll be some updated contacts details but no.

This years was their usual Robin one but they've splashed out on a gold pen this year.Xmas Wink

We had a similar situation and responded to them to let them know their invite had not got to the intended recipient. Everyone concerned was very grateful and the intended recipient actually lived several doors down on the same street and thanked me personally.

Bills and such to previous residents get put back in the post box with 'return to sender' written on them.

I've just realised that we don't get post for precious residents anymore and that it took the best part of a decade to get to that point! ShockSmile

I would email them, it's kind, not weird.
I'd be pleased if I was that person and someone took the trouble to let me know.
Small acts of kindness. Smile

We get Christmas cards every year for the people who moved out of next door over 10 years ago the husband had same full name as my husband. As I say every year well they can't be that close if they don't know their address.

I emailed the sender and she replied saying thanks for 'letting me know - I should have checked the address first'.

Nice outcome Smile we get a card every Christmas for the previous owners of our house. We've been here over 15 years now.
