AIBU?

AIBU to think this woman was being ungrateful

I offered to give kitten food to a group that I'm on as a way of thanking them for helping me out to get my cats spayed I have already made a £20 donation and they are always asking for donations of cat food and a woman told me that they didn't want it but she could give me their PayPal or bank details so I could donate money and she gave me a list of cat food that I could buy for them. Is it just me who thinks you don't turn down cat food if someone is offering it. I thought I was doing a nice thing maybe IABU.

If the cats are brought up on a specific food, then other brands may not be suitable.

Rude however to ask for more money.

DunkMeInTomatoSoup yeah that's true I just thought they might be able to use it because my cat won't eat it and it seemed like such a waste to just throw it away. That's what I thought too.

So she said no to the food you offered but suggested an alternative you could get for them instead? Surely you just get the alternative?

Sorry, posted before your update. Maybe offer it to a local foodbank or rspca?

Were you giving it as you can’t use it? If they can’t either I think it’s a bit weird to think they should just take it anyway and be grateful. If they can’t use it they can’t use it.

I’m guessing she assumed you wished to donate so was giving you alternate options as your suggested donation was not appropriate.

I had no trouble donating a big bag of the wrong sort of cat food that twit DP had bought and lost the receipt for to our local CPL last year. Your contact at whatever this rescue type place sounds a bit too enthusiastic about fund raising for her own good.

If by 'helped you out' you mean 'paid for your vet bills,' perhaps she thinks you shouldn't be in the financial position to be giving away cat food.

Anyway, there's usually boxes at supermarkets to donate spare pet food into.

If they're always asking for cat food donations, they surely can't be only accepting one brand. That'd never work. Sounds like they're being precious to me. Have you tried another nearby cat shelter? There will be more than one.

A lot of places tend to use one type & they don't want to be giving animals a variety because it will either upset their stomachs or they'll be having to keep records of who gets what. It's just practical.

The pet charity food donations box at my local supermarket had a typed out request for kitten food last week. Maybe try there?

It sounds like you didn't give it to them as a way to thank them. That's why she suggested money - she thought you wanted to buy them some as a gift to say thanks.

my cat won't eat it

Was the box open? Most animal charities where I live won't take an open box of food.

I donated boxes of uneaten unopened pouches and dried food after my cat died. The local shelter were happy to take it. I'd try another group.

Cats Protection will take loose sachets/tins as they often feed feral cats.

Other shelters will often feed whatever food they can. I suppose if they are weaning kittens they wouldn't want to mix up their food with other brands offered.

I don't think it's rude. If they can't use it then they can't use it. It is slightly surprising though. We would be grateful for anything.

Sorry everyone meant to come back and say that the cat food got given to my mum's neighbour for her kittens.
