Tidying room - where to start???

Room definitely in need of a good old spring-clean.

To start off with, I've just gathered up every bit of random crap I can find (papers, folders, clothes...) and piled it all on my bed.

I should probably start with sorting out the papers (have a load of old newspapers and magazines) but not sure where to start.

I haven't read most of them, so would like to keep some of them just to read. But then if I keep all of them, I reckon I'll just slide back into my old habits of random crap building up in my room again!!

How do I tidy everything?!

I like the three bags method, put away, give away, throw away. Sort everything into the three piles throw it the throw pile straight away. Put the give away stuffing a bag straight away and then put everything you want to keep 'away'. If they don't have a 'place' already find one so a box or a drawer and make that place for those items only, when it comes round to buying more newspapers/magazines you then need to make sure they all fit in their place. So either you don't buy any more until the ones you have are read/finished with or a one in one out system.

Is the room just untidy or is it dirty ie skirting boards dusty and windows not seen a wipe over in months?
If it was the later I would start at the floor and work up. A big bag at the side of me for rubbish and a basket for any keeps. Clear the floor then move upwards, wipe skirting boards, walls and windows, Hoover curtains or blinds, dust furniture, clean light fitting by either wiping or hoovering depending on type. When everything else is done Hoover the floor and all done.

You don’t need to read the old papers so recycle them and start from scratch. Buy a paper, read it, recycle it. Magazines normally last me about a week before they get recycled or passed on. Go through your wardrobe and put everything that’s wrong sized/old fashioned/ not your style in a recycling bag and take to charity shop. Put things away where they are meant to be, pop some upliftingmusic on while you do it. Cleaning is cathartic and you’ll feel much better when you’re done.

Put everything that has a home away in it’s proper place.

Lift everything off the floor (then hoover)

Clear all the surfaces (then dust)

Things that don’t have a home - either find a place for them or get rid of them.

Newspapers - you haven’t made time to read them so far, are you actually going to? If so consider just saving the articles you actually want rather than the whole paper and put those articles in a folder.

The way I get DC to do it is:
First - all rubbish in bin - thsi includes all newspapers and mags, packaging kept 'in case you need to return the item' broken things you 'might repair'. Let it all go.
Next - all dirty clothes in wash basket and dirty plates and cups etc by sink

Now you're left with stuff you need to find space for.
Put all clean clothes away
Then all books and CDs away
Then any big items
Then any small items

The three bags method works well.
Throw away
Put away
Give away

Chuck rubbish into one bin bag. (Chuck ALL magazines and papers except current ones- you can find what you want online)

Anything you need to put away in another room goes in bag/box/crate 2

Anything you can give to charity in bag 3. Don't kid yourself you'll sell it on ebay. You can start all that mullarkey once you;re organised. To get organised you need to get rid of excess junk quickly, so fill a charity bag and take it straight down to the charity shop or if that's impossible, put it in the car boot so it's out of the house and on its way to charity.

And finally, do something to make the room look nice - once it's hoovered, dusted and polished add flowers or a candle or lamp or throw or cushion or piece of artwork - do something to make you feel good when you walk in.

Why would you read old news papers and magazines when you ahve the internet at your finger tips. Bin them as a fire hazzard.

God yes, chuck out all the newspapers and magazines. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve read them or not.
