I have followed the "WilkyWays" on and off for a few years. I don't actively like every single one of these vloggers that I follow - I might disagree with them on some things, find them mildly irritating but still keep an eye on what they are up to when flicking through social media.

I was bored the other night and decided to google to see what the Dad actually did as there are sometimes references to his job/travel etc. I assumed he was high up in the business world. Turns out he is in fucking UKIP.

UKIP is everything I despise.

Disclaimer - I know this is not really a major problem. I am just generally chit chatting about it. I feel a bit like I want to shudder as I have been watching them and thinking how nice they come across and turns out he (maybe her too) have revolting views and are pals with Nigel.

I cannot comprehend why anyone watches these! Just why?? What do you gain? Why are they worth watching, just an average family doing average shit?! (I assume, based on the two examples I’ve been shown by a friends dd)

I know I know. I agree they are shit. But I have a long term illness and am often stuck in bed/hosp so like to watch shit to amuse me. I don't watch them obsessively just follow them and scroll past see their latest updates etc.

Just looked them up. They sound like idiots.

I love a good family holiday vlog (I don't find normal everyday vlogs appealing). Whenever I start enjoying a family, I do start wondering things like 'are they racist?' Or 'I wonder what they think of me?' (I'm black). YANBU. I'd stop watching.

What's the point of watching the minutia of someone else's life? I don't get it but then I don't get lots of things these days.

If you carry on giving them views you're supporting a racist. Theres no dilemma.

I wonder if that is why they vlog...they must make a good bit out of it they are very popular. They guest blog for Channel Mum page.

So either for the money which yes will then in turn help wankers UKIP

Or also to get his popularity up.

Yabu to watch the boring shite that comprises family vlogs.
Can no one make a decision for themselves anymore? It's hardly a huge life choice - either watch it or don't. You don't need to run it past MN first.

Same can be said for the tv shite they churn out

Costume dramas
Soaps
Reality tv

If they are paid for the vlog (ie have advertising) then you're supporting their lifestyle. I wouldn't do that if I disagreed with their politics.
If they don't run adverts, and I was someone who watched vlogs, then I'd continue to watch. I think it's good to keep an eye on people with opposing political viewpoints.
On Twitter, I follow people with lots of different views. I wouldn't meet an alt-right Mormon in RL so I find it interesting to see how they justify their views and to see how different news events are playing to different sectors of society. I don't want to live in an echo chamber.

Aderyn maybe if you were stuck alone in bed/hosp ill a huge portion of the time you'd ask these minor questions just to make conversation.

I'd raise it in their comments section.

My moral compass would be saying ‘I won’t watch this shite anymore’ but then I could see myself being drawn in by wondering if the new perspective changed the way I interpreted stuff he said etc..

I can see why if you’re bed ridden you have to widen your interests to include even vloggers! Poor you Flowers

Do they disassociate themselves from their Dad or do they share the same views (probably good at hiding even if they do?) I hate to tar people with the same brush but I do draw the line with UKIP, BNP, Neo Nazi, any racists vloggers, etc.

I always think this ^^. And if you're desperate for conversation isn't there something better to talk about that doesn't make you sound remarkably indecisive. Maybe "AIBU to contemplate the futility of snowflakes?" or "AIBU to want to have everyone's computers attached to electric shock treatments so that any question posted that isn't really an AIBU gives that OP a 2-million volt shock?" (Not that I get very frustrated about the number of posts that should be in Chat but whose OP's want the attention from AIBU instead!)

OP - sorry to hear you're not well. I'm not ill but am pretty much immobile due to an accident and exhausted due to not sleeping. I hear you totally on needing to watch something that you don't need to think about.

I think you're feeling a bit shaken that something you've taken enjoyment from turns out to be something you despise.

I'm watching lots of trash TV too - stuff I would never in a million years watch usually. Hope you're on the mend soon.

You're welcome. If you need more ideas on how to sound more interesting do let me know. And if you're not sure whether to ask me or not then I'm sure you could ask on Mumsnet so they can decide for you.
(This post took me 30 seconds during the half-time break of the game I'm watching)

Actually only came on here before to check email but thought I'd look at current threads I'd been "watching" on MN. I'm stopping by now (in case you're wondering) because my team is losing & I was picking my ideal home on Rightmove. But we have the ball again so I'm back to the sofa and DDog. And I don't even need to ask MN if I should or not Grin

Look people, stop putting 50p in the dickhead.

OP it's always disappointing when this happens, it's like all the sex offenders of yesteryear's.

I've been ill for two years and have watched everything, from Historical factual programs to short YouTube videos of snippets of gardening.

You'll view them completely differently when you watch them now and as nice as they seem, they aren't. You can only hope that the children rebel by turning out to be decent people.

However it might turn out to be your occasional guilty secret, because you can't help yourself.

I actually find some vlogs more interesting than most shows on TV. Especially ones that are subject based.

Report

I didn't say that the OP's choice of viewing was poor. I said that she should be able to decide whether to watch or not on her own without needing to ask the internet (it's a fairly basic decision), and that asking whether or not she should watch wasn't exactly an interesting AIBU if she was looking for something to do. But don't let the facts get in the way. And there's only one dickhead around here Birds - look in the mirror.
