To buy a new mattress for my uni bed

The mattress I have currently is utterly crap. It's rock hard, the side is caved in and it's very uncomfortable. I've had to start taking strong painkillers again for my back because of it. I'm already using a thick memory foam topper coupled with a quilt topper.

I've been in touch with the accommodation people and they're not at all helpful (basically, there's nothing wrong with the mattress, it was deemed acceptable and even if they could order another, it would be at least a month before it would arrive.) they know about my medical condition and basically aren't interested.

I figure I can spend a chunk of money in some other topper or I could spend about the same on a new mattress.

Ive thought about things like fire rating but surely a new mattress is safer than one that has been used for God knows how long?

I just want a decent night's sleep and not to be in pain all of the time!

No of course not! Pain and poor sleep will have an effect on your ability to do your course work so you need to get one that ensures a comfortable nights sleep. The only problem could be what you do with it in the holidays if you move out of uni rooms next year.

It would come home with me and live in the spare room. If it wouldn't fit in my car (unlikely, I have a seven seater!) my BIL has a van.

Do you have room under the bed to store the uni one? If so, and you can transport it home afterwards, Id get a new one. My ED has a slab of rock at her uni halls. She already as so much stuff we couldn't fit a mattress in the car, but she bought a thick topper from Ikea which has helped a lot.

That’s okay then, my only other thought is to see if student welfare could appeal on your behalf before you shell out. Hope you get it sorted soon.

I'm sure I could get it under the bed. I'll try asking again and if I get no joy I'm going to order something. I can't cope like this for much longer. I'm taking a big dose of codeine just to function without pain and that comes with its own set of problems!

My DD1 told her student landlord she was going to withhold her rent until he replaced her (utterly shagged) mattress. He did so, with a very very hard one so she has now splashed out on a thick mattress topper and is fine.

You have my sympathies OP; comfortable beds is a thing I prioritise, hence my DD going a bit diva ish about it.

If you have room then I would yes. My bed in halls is awful so I feel for you - I left a lovely solid memory foam bed for one that's more like a sofa bed than anything else. If I put my laptop on the bed and then sit down the laptop bounces off. It's quite funny but not great for sleeping. I would definitely replace it if you have the money and the room. Would second advice to contact student services or whatever they're called as well.

Yeah I have a fantastic memory foam mattress at home (I'm seriously thinking about getting in the car and going home to be honest! I'm so uncomfortable!)

Can't believe they can get away with supplying such crap beds!

Neither can I , but my entire flat is very different from what I was shown online - very small , no real storage space etc. Frustrating as it isnt exactly cheap!

I had the same thing a couple of years ago and got a mattress topper from John Lewis - slept like a baby from thereon in, made a massive difference.

You should definitely do something though - nothing worse than an uncomfy bed!

Definitely spare your back. Can Accom do anything about storing their mattress?

When I was at uni the beds were very bad. Most of us purchased entire beds or mattresses. I had the crap mattress between my bed and the wall on It's side with a throw over it. In the day it made it more like a sofa.
If you were to purchase a bed would accommodation services just take the lousy one? Can you ask them.

I feel for you.
Just ordered DS a topper for his Uni mattress-he said everyone in the house (10 students) all walking round hunched over as sleeping so badly they all have backache.
It's poor really but the LL don't really care.
Good nights sleep so important-I think I'd try a topper first and see if that helps.

Don't ask, just buy yourself one. Quicker and avoids the computer day no issue.

It has two toppers on it now but the springs are shot.

I can get a decent mattress for what I've spent on toppers.

Sell the toppers to other students and put the money towards a lovely new mattress!
