Yes is very first world but I just can't. On holiday and in many places they are not deveined. Is it that bad for you? Am I overreacting and should just eat them? My family eat them but I just can't face it.

Ohh no. Isnt the 'vein' their intestine?

I though prawns were bottom feeders.

Please note.....i have no clue of thats true. Just what i was told.

I wrote a really bad review of a restaurant in Spain as we were served a starter and a main course which had prawns with the intestines still in - they totally should be removed, restaurant seemed surprised and said they never remove. They did not appreciate my negative review either, told me I obviously had no experience of high end restaurants!

I always eat them if that's how they're served and I'm still alive to tell the tale. I suck their brains out too

Oh I know it's not going to hurt you but it's poo, I couldn't eat it knowing it's poo

Interesting we are in Spain.... I can just avoid but I do love a garlic prawn fest.

Glad I'm not the only one to avoid the poo!

Deveining isn't necessary if the tract is clear, you can tell if it's not as it's dark.

It's done to personal preference so YANBU if you don't like it in, just remove it.

KinkyAfro, the restaurant was right if the tract was clear, YABU.

It doesn't have to be removed. Some people do, some don't. There's nothing harmful in it at all. Yes it's the intestine but a prawn "poo" is nothing like what you'd consider poo.

Can't you just remove it yourself? They usually just pull out quite easily don't they? I would of thought a restaurant would do it as part of the food prep but I'd just do it myself if they didn't.

Then they will have some grit in them which will affect the flavour.

You dont need to devein a prawn. Its downbto.personal preference abd aesthetics. It not poop in the vein it sediment and not poisonous.
There is no health reason to devein a prawn

I am sure restaurants would have to remove if it was unhealthy, but I don't eat them either, it just looks gross. If I was starving, I would certainly be less picky, but I am not, so I have the luxury to be fussy.
