AIBU to want to report the upstairs flat to their landlord?

Hi everyone Smile

New mumsnetter and first post - eek! Looking for some advice and from what I've seen you guys are great at giving it! ...

We live in a downstairs flat in a typical maisonette style property in London, with one flat above us. We used to have lovely upstairs neighbours but then a couple of months ago, new tenants moved in. A man and a woman, probably in their thirties, seemed pleasant enough and explained to us that they weren't a couple. I've had a fair few conversations with them both over the fence in the garden and get on with them. All was going fine, until last week when my partner and I noticed a few new faces turning up at their door. Again, fine, could be friends or family etc. Except on Sunday night they woke us up at midnight playing loud music and clearly having a party in the flat above us. This party went on until 7am, so you can imagine the night's sleep we got. My OH (check me out using the mumsnet acronyms! Grin) said they must have been doing drugs to be partying at a house party until that time.

Anyway....later that day I saw someone turn up at their door. I don't want to stereotype but just to give you a mental image: tall, young man, grey baggy jogging bottoms, black north face jacket, black cap. I watched him, heard the upstairs flat front door open, they both said 'hiya' and then the tracksuit guy walked off and the door closed. I'm thinking 'what the hell just even happened?' I didn't see anything exchange hands because of the angle of the door.

I have also realised that I haven't seen the two who actually live there for a couple of weeks (usually see them in the garden as they smoke). My OH thought maybe they are sub-letting their flat?

ANYWAY (sorry this is so long), I'm writing this now, because it's just gone past midnight again, and we've just heard a load of people turn up!! And they're being noisy, AGAIN! If they're going to be as bad as last time then OH will go round and speak to them. It's a school night!! But I just feel like something dodgy is going on. What should I do, try to resolve it with the couple who live there (wherever they are) or would IBU to go straight to their landlord?

Thank you for reading!! I look forward to hearing your responses! Smile

Yes - go round at 8am and complain loudly

Yes call the landlord - he won't know unless you tell him

Cutting off someone's electric would be a criminal offence. I'd call the police if someone did that to me, whatever the circumstances.

OP...wait a while and see if things settle. Sounds dodgy but they may just be away on holiday with shit house sitters or something.

By all means contact their landlord if you can't speak to them soon, but you don't want to risk bad feeling if it turns out to be something sort-out-able.

Be prepared for him not to give a toss though.

And I speak, btw, as someone with immense sympathy. I had the neighbours from hell for six months and it was unbearable.

While the party going on until 7am is unreasonable of them in regards to the noise, it is a massive stretch for your OH to declare they must have been doing drugs.

Also, you say you haven't seen them... I never see my neighbours. Lived here a couple of years and only bumped into them maybe four or five times.

I would definitely tell the landlord about the noise disturbance, but leave out any paranoid drug notions or anything about something dodgy going on because it really doesn't seem like there is.

When I was in this scenario, I made sure the flat upstairs were aware I had the electrical cut off in my flat for their flat too but if I didnt have that to hold off them

That's despicable behaviour; you should be ashamed of yourself.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone... I've just resorted to getting some cotton wool balls for my ears Angry while OH is apparantly able to sleep through the thumping music and weird loud banging?!

Sounds dodgy but they may just be away on holiday with shit house sitters or something.

Yes true - maybe we should just see how it goes for the next week. The man and woman who live there seem nice, I've only ever had a few conversations with them but they seem ok. I did find it slightly odd though that they were living together (but not together) ....I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, purely odd in the fact that you don't really see or hear that happen. Don't want to cause any offence/create problems with them! But right now whoever is upstairs is creating a massive problem with me!! Confused

Of course, we wouldn't make any accusations (only on MN!) Just seems a bit weird that we live in a residential area (no students around) and someone is choosing to have house parties on Sunday and Wednesday nights till the late hours of the morning?!

Yes, it's not common behaviour, but people like what they like. There's no problem with that until it starts to interfere in other peoples lives, like how it has done with yours.

I don't think you need to worry about upstairs calling the police to a flat party where sufficient stimulants had been taken for it to still be going at 7am. Wink

Where is their electric box? Grin

Have you checked Air BNB? They could have gone on holiday and let it out while they're away.

Does sound dodgy though. I think maybe tell the landlord.

I'm going for the general mumsnet answer when it come to drugs/neighbours/loud music/smoking..... log it with 101! Hmm

Cutting off someone's electric would be a criminal offence. even if you slipped and knocked the main breaker switch? That's not criminal, it's an accident!

Don't encourage the 101ers Rose Grin

They could work in hospitality - really common to have parties and go out Sunday - Tuesday / Wednesday as thats the only time people have off.
