Neighbours Dog

More of a WWYD.

Neighbour moved in a year ago. She's really nice, 2 kids in their twenties and a 9 yr old. She's on her own and lives on the attached side.

She has a tiny dog that she leaves at home alone day and it yaps (like a high pitched yap). She's not that great with the dog as when I see her out walking it and its still fucking yapping and she tells it to "shit up" or just says "for fucks sake". I'm no expert but it doesn't look like great dog training.

She has a new fella - I saw them snogging in the street when craning my neck to look out the window - hence she was barely here this weekend meaning the dog yapped constantly - it occasionally pauses but will start at the slightest thing damn door to door sellers (I wonder if it was fed ).

It's so bad I had a headache last night - it's constant- and stressful not a dog lover it also seems to make my cat stressed and I worry that a dog shouldn't be left all the time?


I am not the most assertive person in the world but what do I do? Have a chat with her? She must know it's barks all the time she is out? Or be more drastic and phone the RSPCA.

I can hear it in the garden and out in the street so she wouldn't know it was me?

It might be better to report it to Environmemental health, as a nuisance, the RSPCA might investigate, but it depends whether they think its being fed and looked after generally, and probably wont go anything, but still worth reporting

Or her landlord? That feels a bit tight but pretty sure they don't know she has a dog..

Her landlord won't be able to do much and neither will the RSPCA. Phone the noise abatement at the council...keep doing it.

They come out and measure the noise and tell her she's got to do something.

I hate people who get dogs and then leave them all day!

How could she know it barks all the time when she's out? Have you mentioned it to her? I probably would before reporting it. She needs a chance to take the matter seriously.

Leaving dog at home all day unfortunately isn't an offence as long as dog has food, water and shelter. So RSPCA wouldn't be able to do anything by law. You need to contact LA environmental health as it's a noise issue.

Put an anonymous but friendly toned note through her door explaining the yapping and dog laws, and tell her that you don't want to have to contact the rspca and want to give her a chance to remedy the situation, but will not hesitate to contact them if things do not improve.

Poor little dog.

If she's really nice as you mentioned I would have a friendly word. She might not know it yaps constantly and would probably not take offence. You can be nice about it and say you realise it might take her a little while to sort this out, but be sure to let her know it's really loud and it does disturb you. If she still doesn't do anything then you could go from there.

RSPCA cannot do anything if an animal has food, shelter and water and is not being cruelly treated. Unfortunately it's not against the law to leave a dog at home alone for many hours.

She must know it's barks all the time she is out? How would she? Although, yes she probably does. I think Reow had the right idea. A polite but firm (underlying hint of threat of reporting to RSPCA) is best at this point. Her dog will be spending most of its days in distress.

When she comes home she can hear it barking before she reaches the door.

I would say she might just assume it barks when she leaves and returns and not think of it barking all day. She would probably think that someone would say something if it went on a lot. Whether you go for the note or a chat depends on how you think she might take it. Anonymous notes can put people's backs up , but if she is the type to start a feud its best she doesn't know it's you.

It's a noise nuisance and you shouldn't have to live like this. Contact your local council, environmental health dept and report. I've done it but unfortunately we never did find where the barking dog was! It barked day and night but from an estate a couple of roads away from my house. Environmental health visited, heard the barking but were at a loss as to find out where it lived

My neighbour's dog used to get left in the garden yapping for hours, when I finally lost my temper and spoke to her about it she was amazed! Didn't think anyone could hear her dog 'playing' in the small back gardens of our small terraced road if you can call standing by the bark door barking to get in playing
Point is everyone had been polite waiting for her to sort and she taken it as a carte blanche. Meanwhile the other neighbours reported her to the council and she was massively offended.
