Hi everyone.

This might sound a bit rubbish (or lazy), but I find it really hard to get up in the morning.

Please could you give me your tips on how to get up early in the morning (around 7ish, for example) but still feel well-rested and have a good night's sleep?

Thanks very much in advance :)

Go to bed earlier.

No screens before bed.

Buy something nice to eat for breakfast.

As soon as your alarm goes off straight away. It's hard at first but easier in the long run than hitting snooze.

Get up at the same time every single day and change when you go to bed to fit. Basically that until it becomes habit. If that doesn't solve it there could be a problem with your sleep quality. I find tracking sleep with a fitbit handy. The jawbone up has an alarm that will wake you at the lightest part of your sleep cycle, that can help with the groggyness but they break very easily. There might be something else that does that though.

Get everything ready the night before so you dong have to think.

I pack school bags and put them on the door mat, put uniform outside ds room in a pile, my clothes outside my bedroom door in a pile and towels on the bathroom floor ready for me when I get out shower. I also plate up breakfast the night before and put a cup of ds milk in the fridge already poured.

The alarm goes off and I grab ds breakfast and drink for him. He has that while I hop in shower. We both brush teeth together and then get dressed. Go down the stairs, pick up bags on Mat and go out the door.

Work out how much sleep you need. Go to bed early enough. No screens for an hour before bed and eat at least 2 hours before. If it takes you a while to get to sleep, factor that in, as well as getting back you sleep after the toilet etc. So bedtime should probably be 10pm and do that every night. Even if it requires sacrifices.

Good sleep hygiene. Google it.

Practice. I hated it when DP started working earlier shifts but now wake automatically at 5 (even on weekends!😢).
There are apps that change the backlight of your phone screen from blue to a red/pink tint. You can adjust the intensity and dim level. I always use mine now (it's set to start up at 8ish) as I tend to look at my phone before bed. I find it works for me.

Just get up. I'm not trying to sound dismissive, I used to be a late riser, but since DD and returning to work part time, I am up at 5.15am. The first few months were hard. Now I just do it without thinking.

Agree with others. Husband works shifts, which involves a 4:30 am rise (I get up with him), and the only way I can cope is to (silly as it sounds) just get up. If I lie there thinking how tired I am, how I don't want to get up, it makes everything much worse..but if I just do it I sometimes feel shocked and stunned for a minute or two, and then I'm fine. It does mean though that you have to adjust at the other end of the day, and we are often in bed very early (sometimes when you really don't feel like it - but not going early is a big mistake). It soon becomes habit and you get used to it.

I have my alarm on the other side of the room, so I have to get out of bed to turn it off. If the alarm was within reach of the bed, I would be turning it off in my sleep.

Agree with most posts - get up when the alarm goes off, no snooze. Keep to the same routine every day. Good sleep hygiene (no screens before bed, no food too close to bed time, no caffeine in the pm, etc.). Have as much ready as possible the night before and try to have something you really like when you get up (good breakfast, or get a really nice coffee maker, or upgrade your shower experience, or have 20 minutes all to your self with your coffee and mumsnet/paper/good book to wake up)

It's also possible you have to accept that you just have a body clock that is always going to hate the early mornings, so if you do everything right and you still feel awful in the mornings but you can't get out of getting up then, just try and schedule the things that really need your attention for later in the day, when you're feeling more on form.

Invest inn two children. Though that might not help with the well rested bit!

I was always a night owl but my 4th child was a natural early riser and my cats get me up early so now I'm always up by 6am. I have to go to sleep by 10pm though. I just can't stay awake. You do need some kind of incentive, I think. Try to think of something to motivate yourself.

bumwad and thirdload stole my line... you are welcome to my children. They don't take no for an answer!

Otherwise yy to a good alarm, do not snooze and get going straight away. You'll feel awake sooner.

Definitely agree with getting up as soon as your alarm goes off, no snoozing! Always makes me feel worse if I lie around for a while.

I get straight into the shower and then have a mug of tea, feel fine after that. We're up around 5.30/5.45am so I make sure I'm in bed by 10pm.

a strong light on a timer may help.

getting up in the dark is rather dispiriting

Use a music alarm with music starting before the point you need to wake up. Preferably starting with soft calm music at low volume and building up in loudness and hardness. This helps gradually wake up, means you're not being irritated awake, keeps you awake through the groggy stage and means you start off your day with fun / nice music.

You can also get lamps that gradually get brighter that could be used to improve the effect of waking up to music, but they rely on your bedroom not letting in much sun
