AIBU?

To ask how to help my friend?

A friend of mine is suffering from electromagnetic hypersensitivity - for those who haven't come across it, it's an apparent allergy to electricity, Wi-Fi etc, though it's not medically recognised as every scientifically viable study done on it has concluded that it's psychosomatic.

Whether I believe it's real or not is a moot point as it's very obviously affecting my friend, who is now essentially homeless and unemployed as she focuses on avoiding electricity at all costs.

I'm worried about her, and she has no idea what to do next or how to try to live a normal life. Does anyone have any experience of this or any ideas at all? I have posted about this on one of the health forums previously but got no responses!

SHe needs to see a psychiatrist but you are unlikely to be able to convince her of this

Thanks Beco. I've tried that but you're right it's like banging my head against a brick wall.

I once read about places that are near huge telescopes that ban all mobile phones, wi-fi, microwaves etc because they interfere with the results.

In this small community in the US there were lots of people who suffered from the same 'condition'.

Probably not much help but it shows that there are some places to go (other than a doctor) and other people who feel the same.

I am very sorry for your friend.

I have recently seen it covered in a show called 'Better Call Saul' (prequel to Breaking Bad) with a character who suffers with this condition.

I think, as you implied, it is a psychological condition.
Does your friend accept that or does she believe it is a real physical 'allergy'?
Has she sought help? Does she want help?

No help, but I have heard of this. I always wonder, how do people with this feel about the sun. That massive thermonuclear explosive broadcasting a constant and unimaginable tidal wave of electromagnetic radiation on all wavelengths.

Or is it only ' artificial ' electricity that triggers the symptoms.?

X post.
Sorry then. If she doesn't want help and doesn't accept she needs help there is very little you can do.

Apart from make space for her in your house with nothing in it and space blankets all over the wall? It must be such a dibilitating condition.

That sounds awful. When you see her do you take your phone with you and leave wifi on or does she make sure you don't? I ask because could you hide it on you, stay with her for however long chatting normally asking if she's okay and if she says yes then reveal the phone? (Actually reading that back it might freak her out and send her in a panic, perhaps not)?

She's struggling to find any communes in Europe. Makes sense really as those who are suffering wouldn't be likely to go on the Internet much!

She accepts that for some people it's psychological but she says it's absolutely not for her.

Jimellis in our less charitable moments a few of us mutual friends have thought about asking her that! BlushGrin

Mission I've actually done that ! Thing is though that she literally never feels okay as she's allergic to everything and always feels unwell for one reason or another so she'd attribute my phone to that

Could she have something like ME or lupus?? exploring those might give her something else to focus on. there are some debilitating illnesses which are not easily diagnosed.

Thanks Jayfee I'll ask her!

If she won't accept its psychsomatic, and do her best to get advised treatment then she's not really trying to get better- therefore you can't help her.

I've met people who have had this while I have been on courses. I'm sorry I can't remember what they did but they were getting better so that is good news for your friend.
One thing she could do is look at the healthy house website (link below) which has some advice. She may want to call them to see if they know of any support groups. I discovered them when my son had excema and they seem like nice people.
I also used health kinesiology therapy to sort out my son's milk intolerance and his excema. He was prescribed dairy-free baby formula by the pediatrician but after three health kinesiology sessions he could tolerate milk and now has a regular diet like other children. So I've also included the link to the Health Kinesiology website at the bottom of my post.
You are a nice friend trying to help her. Although, one thing I would recommend is not telling her it's all in her head. I was very sick two years ago, and while I didn't have what she had, I was struggling with my immune system and felt better when I didn't spend too long sat near my wifi box. But this got better when I got better. Our bodies have their own electrical system and it's not crazy to think that in some people their's has gone a little haywire and they are affected by human-made electrical products etc.

There are lots of isles in Britain she could move to. West coast of Scotland or the norther isles of the shetlands or orkneys. A lot of the smAller islands don't have electricity. Send her there for a holiday and see if she feels better.

Electro sensitivity is a recognised condition outside of the UK. The EU regards it as a disability and not of a psychological nature either. The media has done a very good job in the UK in creating a cover up and the implication is that these people are 'nutters' and '' hypochondriacs'. If you care to research the subject, you will find that there is much peer reviewed science confirming the connection that low level non ionizing pulsed microwave radiation has on humans, animals and plant life, on a cellular level. It can and does affect every system of the body. To anyone that would poo poo this, surely you have to ask yourselves why have we seen allergies rise at an exponential rate? Why do we see so many cases of chronic illness? Why have two of the most prolific cancer types diagnosed in children increased 40% in the last two decades? It's not rocket science. Anthropogenic (man-made) radiation such as this is abhorrent to all life forms. The best advice and support you can give to your friend is to protect her sleeping environment which at least will enable her to gain a restorative, deep, healthy sleep, where the melatonin/seratonin cycle can begin to recover and in turn grow her immunity. Swiss Shield Naturell is a very good choice when it comes to shielding. It is completely natural and is not surface conductive. It will reduce high frequency from entering her sleeping environment. Please do not treat her like a mental case, this condition is real.

Really calvinlookingforhobbs? Living on one of those small islands, we do have electricity, broadband and even 4G in some places!

Tell her to go to the UK Electrosensitives Facebook Page www.facebook.com/groups/675328022574090/ or Electro Hyper Sensitivity (EHS) Group Facebook Page www.facebook.com/groups/1439775389599261/
Plenty of people on there who will be able to help her.
