AIBU?

To think this Facebook man hunt is worse than the comment that started it?

I've name changed because I commented on the post in question and know the person who started it and don't want this thread to out me.

Whenever there is a tragedy there is always some dickhead there ready to make a disrespectful joke. Since the Manchester attacks I've seen hundreds of bellow the belt comments from trolls looking for a reaction. Somebody I know came across a comment on something to do with the attack yesterday where a man said 'if only they had better taste in music' and a woman replied something along the lines of 'serves her right I suppose for her shit taste in music?! ' With a picture of little Saffie attached. He screen shotted those comments and shared them on his own profile asking for everyone to share it and saying there would nice reward for the person who found them and gave him their addresses.

The woman's comment was completely misinterpreted. She was being sarcastic/showing her disgust. Very few seem to have realised that though and some disgusting threats have been made to both of them. Over a thousand people shared it. The woman closed down her account in the end.

I commented that people have misread, the women didn't deserve all this abuse and explained that If I was the family member of this child I would be sickened that vile threats and comments such as 'they should be live streamed and skinned alive' and 'the scum need torturing' were being made in her honour. My advice about reading properly must have fell on deaf ears because the first word in response to my comment was my name being spelled wrong and then some crap about standing up, not caring about offending people and bleeding hearts or some such nonsense.

The post was thankfully removed by Facebook for inciting violence before i got a chance to reply but there's been lots of comments from people on a follow up status of his saying that they're now going to create their own posts about it with the original screen shot they saved.

I'm just so disgusted with this Facebook vigilant shit. Not just in this case, I see it all the time on those 'name and shame' posts. But this is probably the worst and most ridiculous example I've seen. This bloke hadn't even engaged with the person making the comments. He didn't know anything about them or where they are from he just didn't like the comments (understandable) so screen shotted it and started offering a reward for their addresses (unhinged beyond belief)

AIBU to find this whole man hunt more disgusting than the comment that actually started it all off?

YANBU

"the scum need torturing"

Comments like that are not uncommon. I'd find the unintended irony amusing if it weren't do disturbing.

The problem isn't me seeing these things mumis. Me logging out of Facebook doesn't stop the fact that an innocent woman who was only challenging a troll with sarcasm has been threatened with extreme violence/murder and has had her name plastered all over the internet by thousands of people at the request of a boxer built like a brick shit house who's offering a reward for her location.

I think this goes a bit beyond offensive crap.

Facebook isn't compulsory... for anyone

What you describe isn't unusual

YANBU. Big Brother has basically won. People become animals on social media and are not able to read sarcasm or any sort of nuance. I no longer comment on public threads with my own name. I once dared to suggest that we all had a duty to help look after children and the weakest in society and someone messaged me "You are everything that is wrong with this world". Sad

What you describe isn't unusual

And you don't think that's wrong?

This is the problem with Facebook. There is no filter. You cannot appreciate nuance, sarcasm or irony in a way that would be perfectly obvious in a face to face conversation.

I'd be tempted to fight fire with fire and circulate something about him that vigilantes could get there teeth into.

Making threats to kill on Facebook is a crime, for which at least one person that I know of has been jailed.

Has it been reported to the police?

This is why I'm not on Facebook or the like!

I've come off it. There really is some vile shit out there.

So far, I've missed a homework assignment that my daughters teacher forgot to tell us about so put a last minute note on the class page and turned up at another extracurricular activity that had been cancelled. The whole world must be glued to their fucking phones!

""The whole world must be glued to their fucking phones!""

You use your notifications for what might be essential, so your phone lets you know when something is posted.

There have been calls after this attack for all SM providers to act more responsibly and tighten up their rules and what they report to the Police.

Just one of the many reasons I am not on FB! People like to feel safe spouting these disgusting words behind the safety of their screens.
watching nearly everyone I see is glued to their phone.

liney I don't know if it's been reported to the police. The entire post and comments have vanished since FB removed it for inciting violence so there's no actual evidence of any of it now.

I think her comment was ill-judged, but she didn't deserve to be the subject of a witch hunt.
