to ask workmen to turn radio off?

I've got two carpet fitters working here today.

They arrived half an hour ago and brought a portable radio with them - which they promptly turned up to full volume.

It's a terraced house so I can't escape it. Would I be unreasonable to ask them to turn it off or is that not the done thing?

I hate working without background noise so I personally wouldn't ask someone else to. When I have stuff like this done I just go out for a bit, can you do the same?

I would just leave them to it. They are there to fit carpets, not moving in to your spare room. Can you really not let them have their tunes on while they work for a few hours

God I really hate this. I'll probably be flamed but it's male bloody entitlement. We all have to suck it up when there are workmen anywhere cos it's just what they do. It's every time there's a window fitter or anything round here. I work from home and whilst you don't expect silence it's so annoying.

I mean the drilling and banging is loud but then radio even louder so they can hear it over the top. Urgh!

I think it's rude to put a radio on in a client's house without checking with them that it's ok.

I would probably come up with an excuse, like 'sorry, I'm now going to make some phone calls, so I 'm going to have to ask you to turn that right down.'

I sometimes listen to music when I work but I don't force the whole street to.

Carpet fitters are perhaps not cranking the van stereo up as much as the window fitters 6 doors down did recently, so OK maybe op is being a bit sensitive. (--I still agree with her tho--)

I'd tell them to turn it down or turn it off. They are in your home working for you. We had builders for 2 months & each new trade person would come in & turn the radio on & up which was fine when I wasn't in but when home with the children I asked that they turned it down.

I asked them to turn it down and they did but were a bit stroppy about it. I only moved in a couple of months ago and I know my next door neighbour quite often works from home so I wouldn't want to get off on the wrong foot with them.

I think Mumteedum has a point about male entitlement though. I would never do that in someone else's home - whether I was working there or not.

I have no problem with workmen listening to the radio at reasonable levels, ie you can hear it whilst you are in the room that the radio is located in - but not at the other side of the house.

They need to remember that they are working in other peoples homes, not in their own private office

As a woman who works in other people's houses, I would always check if it's ok. Is that really coincidence?

Also a coincidence that every woman I know who works in other people's houses and gardens has equipped themselves with MP3/radio/phone and earphones, for times we really need a soundtrack, but don't want to impose it on other people? Really?

I just accept it to be honest. I think you're being a bit uptight.
