To take birthday cake to restaurant?

The restaurant have said it's fine - group of 7-8 of us but can we have it in lieu of dessert? Yes I know it means the restaurant won't profit from us buying dessert but we will buy starters and mains. Just wanting to know your experiences really.

In my experience if restaurant says it's ok, then it's ok! I've had restaurants provide plates and cutlery for us to eat our cake.

I work in a restaurant, this happens all the time, never a problem, we even provide plates and cutlery

We do it and order teas and coffees instead of dessert. I was a waitress for a while and this was standard practice. Sometimes we will order ice cream for the kids.

Maybe make a point of ordering an extra round of drinks or teas/coffees to go with it?

Yes you can have the cake as your dessert, normally the restaurant will be happy with it and will provide plates and cutlery.

It's fine if the restaurant says so. I would order tea/coffee or a scoop of ice cream each anyway to go with the cake.

I've done it a few times - waiters took the cake and candles we brought and brought it out as a surprise for my mum on her birthday. We added a few pounds extra onto the tip but we were a largish party (8) and had ordered lots of drinks (where they make most of their money apparently) so I didn't feel bad about it as far as restaurant profit went.
