It depends, more context is needed. My friends and I can always laugh at our past misdemeanours but I know that there is no malice intended. On the other hand, if a so-called friend is bringing things up with the intention of humiliating you then that person is quite clearly not a friend, but you already know this...

Friends and I do this to each other, but not about anything that is humiliating. Just tell them seriously that you don't like it. If they are genuine friends, they should stop doing it.

If it's hilarious, surely it's funny to be reminded? Don't take yourself so seriously. It's one of my favourite things when my old friends and I take the piss out of ourselves and each other for the clothes we wore and funny nights out.

Oh god my DSis does this only it's 'remember when you were 6 and you wet your pants'. And it's never an isolated one, she then goes on to recount all the 'funny' stories about what happened to me before she was even born!

I hate this too. The first time my now-DH met my so-called best friend she said 'Iam so glad you finally found someone. Remember when you were so desperate to get married you would have had anyone?'

(For the record, I remember no such thing.)

I also hate family get togethers.... my DM has form for getting drunk then taking the piss out of me for this or that. - we have an uneasy relationship.

I might start reminding her of things she did - when she is really drunk she gets all maudlin and cries and apologises for how she was when I was a child (violent mostly).

A good friend will bring up funny stuff you got through together perhaps. You can laugh together to remember.

Horrible though when people bring up stuff which 1) wasn't funny for you, just embarrassing, and 2) didn't even bloody happen! It just gets embellished with more '' hillarious '' fictional each time it's told

Alternatively, you could just explain quietly and calmly to your friend that you find some of these things bad to remember, and that sometimes the past is best left in the past.

I actually spend very little time with my family but when I do (Xmas, milestone birthdays etc) I get more and more tense as the alcohol flows. I am just waiting for the "God, do you remember that awful boyfriend AF had..." (it was an abusive relationship)
