AIBU to think that if I shout loudly about calories in and calories out the overweight people will suddenly see the light and stop eating and get thin? I've been doing it for a while now, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Don't sell your sell yourself short.

I've gone off my can of stella and fish supper breakfast just reading your post.

Shout louder then, they're probably fat in the ears too and can't hear properly. If you feel like ringing the changes, wibble about eating food, not too much, mainly plants.

Can you shout a bit louder please? I have my pizza wrapped so far round my face, my ears are blocked.

I'VE JUST REALISED I HAVEN'T BEEN SHOUTING PROPERLY! THIS WILL HELP, WONT IT?!

There we are, I've solved the western world's obesity crisis. Phew! Relax.

I'm off for a carefully weighed carrot stick and a sniff of houmos. I might let myself lick the lid as I've used so much energy typing.

I got dh to look up the calories of beer and other stuff on my fitness pal.

Once he understood that the 2500 calories was for an active, healthy weight average man - calculated in a time of no central heating, few cars and far more physical work, he got he was overeating.

Took 17 years though!

Btw, he knew NOTHING about basic nutrition, ate veg because i put it in front of him and he liked it. He was just never taught the value in food - hes a bright guy who went to woodwork and maths instead of biology and food tech.

I belive the official line on the obeisity crisis is that its a bit more complicated than that.

Its been done to death already, but I think the whole environment humans have created for themselves is geared towards obeisity. Its not just purely down to an individuals choice to eat something or not.

But the majority of people who are overweight can't help it and were just made they way. They're just big boned. It's nothing to do with overeating.

I'd grab some popcorn but it seems inappropriate...

The point about the calorie allowances being too much now for our slobby ways is relevant though.

I think generally people (myself included) underestimate the amount of calories consumed and over estimate the amount of calories burnt.

I have a steaming cold at the moment and have somehow managed to lose 4kg over night. I think most of it has come out of my nose if the number of tissues I have used is anything to go on.

Perhaps I should market this as the new diet phenomenon.

I'd this the 'one weird trick that doctors don't want you to know' I've see talk of at the bottom of the internet?

Calories in, calories out. Seems simple, doesn't it? But it does not explain resting metabolism, when some people burn considerably more calories by just existing and breathing - some of the super slim all-day-food-gorgers are not especially physically active either - I know because two of them live with me.

The growth in overweight has many causes:

  1. The modern way of eating out in a way that people just didn't in the 1940s - 1980s, supermarket meal deals, ubiquitous coffee shops, walking along with a drink in hand.

  1. Huge advertising power of big food companies making it seem normal to consume their products.

  1. Sedentary lifestyle ironically caused by technology designed to improve our lives: cars, computers, phones, tablets, escalators, lifts - if you try using stairs in most shops and hotels, you find yourself in filthy dark staircases getting strange looks from warehouse workers.

  1. Closure of small schools considered unviable so pupils no longer walk to school.

  1. Growth in working mothers meaning children are more likely to attend after school club/child minder then get collected by car.

YABU. Carrots and houmous are no longer the perfect MN snack. It's kale and fresh air only.

Step away from the carrots OP. A moment on the lips a lifetime on the hips.

It's like you haven't even heard of the dust diet. Grin

People snack more these days - coffees on the go, muffins and cupcakes to go with them, food in front of the TV, food at the cinema, eating during the food shop - even getting takeaway means you order it from your phone and get it delivered to your door instead of having to go to the chippy and queue.

People rely on cars more as well. Drive up the road to school/the shops/the takeaway - people walking a couple of miles to school/work is no longer normal.

It's hard to constantly go against the societal norm. When everyone else is doing it, it's not easy to stand up and say no.

There is a lot of truth in that MollyHuaCha. A friend of mine was shocked when she found out that her drink from Costa's was in fact a 600 calorie bomb. Basically it was a full cream ice cream with a brownie on the side but in her head it was 'just a coffee'.
