AIBU?

To ask whether I've done the right thing? :/

Got chatting on tinder to a guy who apparently comes to my area a lot to stay with friends, but doesn't live here so catching train home tonight. He suggested meeting for a coffee before he left, I agreed and he said he'd message when he was nearby (he was doing something with friends today) so we left it at that. He messaged at 7ish to let me know he'd be in my area in the next hour; I saw the message just now though as I sat down to dinner - so have apologised and told him that... no reply! Should I have gone? My housemate has cooked a huge feast and it would be really rude to leave but I feel bad. Did want to meet him. Have asked him to get in touch next time he comes.

No, when messages are sent, people cannot assume it has been read the moment it has been sent. He may not have seen yours yet either.

Yes you did the right thing. He should have given you a rough idea of time much earlier rather than expecting you to sit around waiting for him to be ready like you have nothing better to do

Thanks - he seemed nice from his messages and I replied when I saw it just saying would have been fun but unfortunately just sat down to dinner - would be great to do something when he's next in the area though. His train is from v near my house which is why I felt bad (10 min bus journey) but I guess ball is in his court now!

A 10 minute bus journey is not 'close' (I'm city centre though so I guess it's relative) and it's a bit rude for him to just assume you were available at the drop of a hat...

You did the right thing.

Although re-reading I see you knew he was tied up all day and seemed happy enough for a quick coffee.

Great. Tbf he doesn't know it's a 10 min bus journey - I just told him I live nearby and I would prob be around this eve. Ah well!

He just messaged saying "don't worry, enjoy your dinner! X" no mention of rearranging. Do I reply? :/
