AIBU?

To think Jimmy Saville impressions are distasteful and unfunny no matter how 'edgy' your humour is.

It's just yuck and not funny isn't it?
Pretending to wave a cigar around whilst muttering 'now then, now then' and leering.

I'm apparently not sophisticated enough to be getting the edgy humour because it's just 'bants' but frankly after that documentary I don't want to even think about JS let alone have my twat of a partner creep up behind me doing this.

He thinks it's he's just having an edgy laugh and I should lighten up Hmm

Yanbu. Edgy humour? Nope, wrong on so many levels.

He's not being edgy, he's being creepy and weird.

Crankycunt · 05/10/2016 08:33

So he's pretending to be a paedophile? That's really funny Hmm

Yanbu at all.

YANBU, I think it's horrible. Fuck these 'edgy' types, they are always complete wankers!

Some comedy is meant to be distasteful. Frankie Boyle, for example, really pushes the boundaries.
It's one of the functions of comedy.

I might not find it funny but I defend other peoples right to make comedy from whatever they want.

There is a difference between distasteful and offensive though, user

I think it is distasteful, but I'm sure some people would say otherwise (probably not on MN, though).

But then I also object to anyone doing an impersonation of Hitler, although most people don't seem to have an issue with that. I know people who would find a Savile impersonation distasteful but not a Hitler one. "Yeah, but he was mad, wasn't he, so it's not the same. Being a paedophile is far worse." (and yes, I have heard that said). Both deserve to burn in Hell. But it's OK to impersonate the one who was responsible for the deaths of countless millions of people.

I think in the privacy of your own home it wouldn't necessarily be a problem for your DP to do this IF you also found it funny. You don't, so he shouldn't.

You'd need to pick your audience. In a group of friends who like e.g. Frankie Boyle and Cards Against Humanity, fine. In a fundraising meeting for a children's hospital, inappropriate. I would find it funny in the pub but would shudder at work.

To you, maybe. Thats a subjective judgement unique to each person.

And anyway, I say the same about "offensive" humour. What is the alternative? Ban all comedy that you find offensive?

Who the heck wants to be reminded of that monster?

If someone thinks that it's funny to impersonate such a sickening, vile criminal, I would judge them as complete wankers.

I think if an individual doesn't like it and finds it in poor taste then her partner (!) is a twat for continuing to do it.

No you can't ban comedy you don't like or approve of but that's not what the OP is asking is it? Her personal feelings are as valid as someone who doesn't mind it, so she won't actively seek out and attend shows where impressions like this will take place. She shouldn't have to tell her partner to stop it all the time, he should have some respect for her!

Have you said to him that you don't want him impersonating someone who's a rapist, pedophile and necrophile (is that the correct word)?

If so, everytime he does it say "ahh your pretending to be a rapist again, no I don't find that funny" and just walk out of the room.

It's in very poor taste. I don't find paedophiles funny.

Excuse my terrible spelling by the way!

In poor taste and possibly offensive. Neither of these is a reason not to make a joke.

Report
StrongTeaHotShower · 05/10/2016 10:34

I just feel it's in poor taste. It creeps me out and he knows it.

I'm not trying to ban edgy comedy but I don't like it for the same reason I don't find rape jokes funny.

It's in appalling taste, and I would suspect the motives of someone dredging up the mannerisms of a criminal of the worst sort for public amusement. It is not 'edgy', it is crass mimicry.

When someone comes up with original, inventive material for entertainment then they might get my respect.

I just don't want to be reminded of Jimmy Saville in any way, by anyone and never did. Even when he was still alive and it hadn't all come out just what he had done. He was always completely revolting and disgusting , so I don't want to see a photo or hear any impressions or anything. To have a husband who thought it was funny to impersonate him would be really infuriating.

Report
Mynestisfullofempty · 05/10/2016 11:03

In fact, thinking about it, it's as if your husband thinks the things JS did are a bit funny and he finds it amusing in some twisted way. Unacceptable and sick.

Yanbu. I'd be wondering about the sort of person who thought this kind of thing was amusing.

Glad to see I'm not alone on this. He's always has this stupid 'laddish' humour that thrives either on other lads egging on or someone (in this case me) being unsettled.

I actually find some of Frankie Boyles stand up funny so I'm not a complete stick in the mud.
