AIBU?

to be annoyed that my face still hurts?

still hurting 15 days after a bad extraction. Lower pre-molar wouldn't budge, and dentist spent 30 minutes pulling, pushing and tugging. Then the top half of the tooth popped off, the dentist giving my upper teeth an almighty clang with her instruments. Further 15 mins of pulling, pushing and tugging on the roots before I said I'd had enough. The whole thing was very traumatic, and not much support from either the dentist or her assistant.

Although the pain has lessened, I still have a deep crevice in my gum, bits of root sticking out and pain. Even my face hurt this morning when putting on my moisturiser!

For full disclosure I have been back twice complaining of the pain, and was given painkillers, mouthwash and an anaesthetic spray on prescription once, and some kind of oil of cloves dressing the second time. I have been using the painkillers every day apart from yesterday, and the cloves worked for one day. I have to go back to our dental hospital to get the roots extracted, but this could be months. The other option is to get an implant, when the roots would be removed at the same time.

As well as pain from the site, my upper teeth still feel sensitive, and the tooth forward of the site is wobbly (to my mind) and sensitive to the slightest touch. Dentist says all this is normal and will fade.

AIBU to be annoyed or is this par for the course? Should I do anything else?

This is awful! I think find a new dentist!
My old dentist tried to remove my wisdom tooth but it wouldn't budge... It was so sore for days after. My aunt (dental nurse) was horrified as he hadn't done X-Rays.. She pointed out that if it could be attached to a bone.
I ended up having a general and having the lot removed!

no xrays, and she did say afterwards it must have been attached to the bone :(

I can't believe that did that without an x-ray, or that you were awake for it. That's horrifying.

I'm not in the least bit surprised I had a crown done earlier in the year I had loads of impressions but when she put the crown in it didn't fit so she had to grind it down. When I came out the dentist I felt like I'd been in a fight with mike Tyson my jaw hurt for months. It's put me right off dentists I couldn't even face my check up this time

I had a very traumatic extraction decades ago which was a similar experience. It was expected to be a straightforward one but it took well over an hour, and at one point there were two dentists pulling and two nurses holding me down! The tooth broke and then they cut open my jaw to get to the roots, it was utterly hideous. My dentist was actually lovely and usually gentle but it just was that everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.
Anyway, I was in pain for a few weeks afterwards, so I would think its normal for the type of experience you've had, but that experience shouldn't be normal for a tooth extraction, if you see what I mean.

thank you all. Any advice on what to do next? Not sure I can face roots out/implant in experience!

Why can they only do the roots with an implant?

Gosh you poor thing. Don't go back. Definitely get on registering with another dentist. They will do their own X-rays to begin with I imagine. I've had my fair share of awful dentists over the years and seem to have found a good one now. She always does X-rays. Once I had a terrible treatment and when I went back as I was in excruciating pain, he had left. Leaving behind patients in the same boat as me.
I had an extraction at the beginning of the year and it really does take a few weeks for it to heal but it sounds like you're suffering and they've done shoddy work.

Poor you! Why on earth did she not do a surgical extraction? Confused I went to our dentists a couple of years ago to have a damaged, dying molar removed (I was seen on the day after phoning in desperation). The dentist - not my regular - numbed me to the hilt then spent a minute or two tugging (it did feel at some point as if he would pull my head off). He then shook his head and set about performing a surgical extraction. It involved cutting into the gum and breaking the tooth and roots up piecemeal - the roots were growing at an awkward angle. I was awake but well numbed, so pain free. Afterwards had a couple of stitches but needed no more than cocodamol then paracetamol for a few days. Oh, and he did take Xrays beforehand.

Your treatment sounds well out of order. I second changing dentist if you can. I hope your pain subsides ASAP. Flowers

Dragonfly they suggest either a root extraction at the dental hospital (under local anaesthetic only) or a combination of roots out/implant in at the same time. Can't decide whether to have an implant at all, but even if I did have one (£2.5K eek!) would it be better to reduce the trauma by having the two procedures separated, or just go for it in one?

I am still v worried about the tooth beside - it is wobbly to my mind, and certainly sensitive. Really hope she hasn't damaged it as well.

Sounds horrific. And I really wish I hadn't opened it - I have two impacted wisdom teeth. I regularly salt water rinse my mouth to keep infections at bay as I cannot face the dentist taking them out Blush

Hope it all settles down quickly. and that you see a different dentist next time
