AIBU?

To be irritated by the term "reaching out"?

When what is meant is "contacting"?

I recently left a comment on a company's FB page with some suggestions as to how they could improve their service. A company rep has now replied and their response starts "Hi Page, thanks for reaching out to us..."

I didn't reach out to you! I contacted you. The only time I "reach out" is to grab something that's arm's length away. I'm not a needy supplicant approaching you with my arms stretched out.

It's not the first time I've seen this used, so AIBU to dislike the creeping replacement of a perfectly serviceable, no-nonsense word like "contacting" with this wank?

(And yes, before anyone wonders, obviously this is all I have to worry about; all wars are over, famine has been eradicated, we're all wonderfully equal and tolerant, free unicorns all round and so now I can get onto worrying about the really important stuff Wink )

Yes!!! I rant at dh about this regularly. In House of Cards (and so many other TV shows) no one ever talks to, speaks with or discusses anything with anyone; they 'reach out' to them. Drives me crazy. Sounds so grope-y.

Yes I too prefer my interactions to have a Latinate root word that means the exact same thing. Grin

It's only a good phrase when used by Tony Soprano.

I hate it! It sounds soppy and emotional and the simple words "talk", "speak" or "contact" would do instead. It makes me want to throw my toys out of the pram!

I hate it too. I also hate utilize. WTF is wrong with saying 'use'? It makes you sound like a wanker intent on just using the biggest word possible regardless of the fact it is a shit word.

Definitely not U OP. I hate it too. But it's sadly cool at the moment. Everyone uses it at work. Yuck.

And what's with this penchant for "excited for" something. It's excited about.

You may be excited for someONE - eg they are doing something exciting, but always excited about someTHING.

I work for an American company (head office in NY) and this is something that I read and say in much email correspondence.

Hate it, it's so wanky but it's how they do thangs.

It's a phrase that needs to be stopped, going forward.

Loathe it. Refuse to say it at work and make a point of saying contact if someone uses it.

Yanbu. It makes me cringe and seethe in equal measure!

Someone recently "reached out" to the tradesman I do admin for, to come and look at her boiler. We laughed for days over that one.

YANBU. And ''touching base''. Just NO!

Looking at you MIL! She is the least affected, Americanised person i know. BUT she says 'touch base' (uuuuugggggghhhh) and has now started saying 'butt' instead of bum!

DH nearly fainted when he heard her the first time. He didn't/wouldn't ever say anything to her but he loves his mum and hates americanised speak with equal passion and i thought he was going to implode Grin
