BASTARD mosquito got into the bedroom the other night. happily swooped onto profligate window-leaver-opener-and-therefore-all-his-fault-it-got-in-in-the-first-place DP, gave him one solitary lousy tiny bite, discarded him and moved on to feast on me. I have about 8 massive bites that have all swollen up and are driving me insane with itching and looking gross.

it's ENGLAND. I don't expect to be bitten by mosquitoes in my own home on a work night. surely that's the sort of thing that you expect if you go on holiday somewhere nice and hot and exotic and worth it?

bah. also, got any good remedies for ugly swollen mosquito bites on hands, wrists and ankles and legs, apart from lady of the night style long gloves and boots??

I've got 4 bites :( Ice cubes help with itching and swelling. They are horrible things!

Antihistamine cream works like magic on me.

I think hydrocortisone cream is the most effective treatment - especially against the itching.

Take a piriton and apply some aloe vera gel. That's what works best for me.

thanks all, will pop out to boots shortly.

if I could find the fucker, i'd have killed it with fire, but it seems to have fucked off back out of the window, having gorged itself with my obviously tasty blood. bah.

I've been bitten by mozzies in England for years. Killed one just the other night.

Ice cubes/cold bathing - mine really swell up too and antihistamines help but icing them really does make a difference.

I too get the rage when bitten in the UK.

You may be allergic to their bites. DD is - her knee swelled up like a football once from one mosquito bite and she could barely walk for days.

Piriton plus Anthisan on the bite itself had some effect.

Don't take this on face value but I've heard a thin layer on clear nail varnish helps reduce the itching. Haven't tried it myself but apparently it was on CSI so it must be true

False! Someone did a test with that. They got bitten more with marmite

I know this is lighthearted, but seriously, how long have you lived in the UK? have you seriously never been bitten by a mozzie there before? Hmm I used to get bitten every fecking summer!

In fact, mozzies in the UK prior to WW2 used to carry malaria - the UK was one of the few countries where dousing the fuckers with DDT worked and we eradicated malaria as an endemic disease by the 1950s. Didn't get rid of ALL the mozzies though, only the malarial ones.

I second Anthisan but it's really important to use it PRIOR to scratching the bite - works far better that way. Of course, in most cases you don't even know you've been bitten until you scratch it, so that's slightly redundant advice...

Don't bank on it having fucked off out the window either. They hide. Behind the bedhead used to be a favourite spot Angry

born here, lived here all my life, never ever been bitten by a mosquito before. somehow it seems really unfair that we have shit weather AND mosquitoes; I always associate them with nice hot places and holidays!

I got two on my right knee on Sunday night that must have blistered almost immediately - I scratched and burst the blisters before I even realised I had them.

The worst one has formed three large satellite blisters around the scab and a cluster of small ones and was pulsating white and red yesterday. The other one is still red and ugly but doesn't look so bad in comparison.

Grin
Best thing is to close all windows, get a decent insecticide spray, spray it solidly for 10 seconds minimum into the middle of the room and then close the door. I stand outside the door with just my arm and the spray in the room so I don't breathe it in. Works in Australia, so it should work in the UK too.
Best of luck - nothing worse than hearing that high-pitched whine in the night!

What the difference between a gnat bite and a mosquito bite? I always put mine down to gnats in this country....!
