Why do restaurants serve food on manky looking wooden boards.

We went to a well known restaurant last night with some friends. I have never been there before, so diden't know what to expect. The food was great, but food was served on this rather manky looking chopping board type thing. I asked for a plate so that I could put my food, and was given one. Is this the done thing now! Wooden boards are not that hygienic, I was thinking of all the germs harbouring on there. I will go there again, and next time as I am ordering, ask the server for a plate.

Thank you yello, Grin, the server should have said, that we serve food on wooden boards, but if you prefer a plate, we can do that!

Whenever I get food on a board there always seems to be a sheet of paper between food and board. Which gets shredded when you're cutting food so yiu end up eating some of it. Bleurgh

It's a desperate attempt by hipster 'gastro pubs' that generally serve mediocre food to express their individuality.

Oh yuck, that is not nice, diden't know the food came with extras too Smile. I ordered a rib eye steak, and ribs, noway on the menu did it say it was served with chillis, lo and behold it came with chillis. I can't eat them, so had to spend time picking them off my food. After that, the food tasted very nice.

This one was a steak restaurant, yes I think its a way that new establishments make themselves look on trend and cool.

It just seems very manky, there was a stain on it, where some of the blood obviously seeped into the wood. Information should be provided on menus or by the servers, and to give you that option.

You sound like a terrible customer.

Can you imagine how impossibly tedious it would be for every server to explain to every table what type of plate the food is served on and to list every ingredient in each dish?

Eat at home.

Then you can plate up the food how you like and make it as bland as you like.

user Hmm, because I prefer a proper plate to a manky old board! I picked out the chillies, I did not complain ffS, I will eat there again, so I will ask for a plate and no chillies on my food. If you are in the service industry, you have to deal with customers and customer service!

You didn't complain in person so that your 'issues' could be rectified but instead slag the chain off to an internet forum, no doubt to your friends IRL too.

I think that's worse.

I hate the trend for plates/slates/mini shopping trolleys etc. I always ask for a plate.

I would have been really embarrassed to be eating with you. Sorry OP

You can name the well-known restaurant, you're not the BBC.

I don't like the idea of seepage with wooden boards. The remnants of other people's grub must surely lurk in them.

For asking for a plate? Yeah, she should have been flung out for exhibiting such shocking behaviour!

Why because I asked for a plate, heaven forbid. That's the thing with the UK, you put up and shut up. If your paying for something than you should have what you want. Wow I did not know that asking for a plate is so shocking. My BIL owns a restaurant, himself, and some of his experiences would have you weep, but he said that he has to try and keep his customers happy. You want them to come back right!

No I did not name the chain, there are a few well known chains of steakhouse, or those that serve steaks.

It is such a British thing. Not daring asking for a single thing that might make your experience that bit more pleasant. Not even if you ask nicely and the waiting staff are happy to oblige. Oh no, apparently that's 'embarrassing'.

Why am I embarassing! Asking for a plate! Yes really embarrassing, how cringeworthy. I treated the server with respect, I did not shout or raise my voice, or ask for my food to be taken back. As I said, the food was very good, so would go back again! Yes It should be on the menu, if a food is garnished with anything, the restaurants I have been, it is usually on the menu as you are selecting, so I can ask for it without.

Hmm What the actual fuck, user? Are you on glue? She hasn't 'slagged off' the chain, we have no idea what restaurant it was. She didn't 'complain' in person but did ask for a plate and got one so the issue was rectified.

Yes it is usual for customers to ask for things, within reason, that is the service industry, and you have to please your customers, if you want them to come back or recommend them to others.
