To be a teeny bit shocked at GirlGuide Camp Activities?

Ten year old DD is going on a week long Girl Guiding camp this summer. Amongst the activities we need to choose / consent to are Axe throwing and Pidgeon gutting !! Is this usual ?

I do axe and knife throwing? What's wrong it? No different to archery?

Gutting animals is not my bag and I have never been part of guides. But I don't have an issue with it.

My 10 yo DD is at Cub Camp at the moment and activities range from air rifle shooting, archery, axe throwing and caving to hot tubs! Don't thonk the activities are unusual.

DD not keen on the Pidgeon gutting, but I think I may be able to pursuade her to try the Axe throwing, to be honest i would quite like a go at that myself.

Well, we did rabbits and air rifles, so sounds pretty normal, if a bit less country to me.

DD does cubs, and they cover a range of things. Her first camp with them is this summer. I expect firelighting, canoeing, climbing, abseiling.

Not sure about gutting pigeons.

Beavers was a bit more rural (in Glos), and not uncommon to see someone with a couple of dead rabbits etc. A lot of the kids had farming connections. We don't, however.

Sounds good. Has been many complaints about guides not doing adventurous stuff like scouts in the past so sounds like your dd is in a good group.

I know our scouts had to gut and cook mackerel and there was talk of rabbit so pigeon sounds reasonable. Axe throwing sounds ace!

Most we got to do at guides was whittle a spoon and play hide and seek on the woods.

Times have certainly chnaged ! It is amazing that they can offer such a wide range of activities on these camps. The leaders are amazing.

Crikey I wish my dd's guides would do stuff like that. They're currently doing the 'passion for fashion' badge which dd is very cross about!

Oh and no camping at all as the leaders don't have their nights away badge I have offered to help BTW, but apparently they've got enough help (before anyone suggests I shouldn't be complaining as they're all volunteers!)

You don't need to gut a pigeon! The only good bits to eat are the breast (considered a gourmet treat, these days, honestly), you only need to get them off and bin the rest of it.
Now if they could teach them to spatchcock a bird, that would be well worth knowing. The bird then cooks in half the time, and this was my proudest kitchen skill achievement!

My son has been to scout camp where gutting a fish and skinning a rabbit were on offer. Perfectly normal camp activities which will be expertly supervised.Going to camp is about learning new skills, independence from mum and dad, getting back to nature.

I went to a really good girl guides when I lived in the city, we did a cook out on tins with candles and had to find somewhere interesting to do it - we did it at the top of the fire station active tower!

I then moved to a village and the guides was more a "passion for fashion" type with boring rule constricted games. I lasted 7 months.

My ds learned how to skin, gut, joint and cook a rabbit at scouts.

So long as it's not compulsory, i can't see the problem.

god i wish they had that in the 80,s .we did sewing /craft /even hostess badge all very lady like .its sounds fab especially the axe throwing
