feeling so angry with myself

Hello
Not really sure where to put this one.
Anyway I had someone knock my door yesterday and started with the whole smart meter for your gas and electric spiel, something to do with Government etc. I thought he was someone from my housing association trying to book in appointments to fit these meters ready for when they become compulsory, so I let him in. Even when he said about changing your supplier my brain didn't kick into action and I found myself signing up to this contract.
I did try to cancel on the phone to the man who phoned whilst the cold caller was there, due to the date available me not being able to do, I said to cancel it and I will phone up once I know where I am at with my job. All he said on the phone was they would phone up at a later date once I am settled back into work.
I had to pop out but when I got back I phone the supplier and told them I wasn't interested and to cancel.
I am just so annoyed at myself because I am normally so good at turning cold callers etc away, I normally say 'can you not read' ( I do actually have a sign on my door clearly stating no cold callers etc.) I remember in my previous property a charity worker knocked my door and I straight away pointed to my sign said my speech and shut the door in his face, so what stopped me yesterday.
I understand people have jobs to do but they are supposed to respect a no cold callers etc sign. I was taken a back by his original speech I think, kind of thrown off guard.
So I have now changed my sign accordingly and also ordered a video doorbell/ intercom thing and for now unless I am expecting something/ someone removed the batteries from my current doorbell. I also wish now I had ignored it and adapted the 'if I am not expecting anyone, I don't answer the door' attitude.
Should I be angry at myself, I feel like I have let myself down, I feel angry I didn't cotton on sooner. What are your stories on these idiot cold callers?

idiot cold callers

That's not very nice. They're just doing their job. Say no thank you and they'll be on their way.

I think your over reacting a bit.

It can be quite intmidating knocking on peoples doors .....take my word for it having delivered a trillion leaflets and cavassing.

I am madly anti social but even I think removing batteries from the doorbell is pushing it a lot bit. Grin

I would maybe put up 3 variations on the "no cold callers" sign to really reinforce the message.

I hate cold callers!
There's a mass of burglaries, car break ins, shed break ins etc in our area lately so people are refusing to answer doors to anyone who may be round to look inside
Just say no to coming in, I always stand with the door slightly open so they can't see in and use 'my partner deals with finances so if you have a leaflet I will get him to call'
It keeps them happy, they have done their job, and I haven't signed up for anything I don't want/need under pressure

I need to add these were people pretending to sell stuff to see if houses were worth breaking into or if people were vulnerable and would return later before I sound crazy, so unfortunately I'm too careful and don't trust anyone now

You have a 14 day 'cooling off' period starting today. The salesman will have left some paperwork with you with a reference number etc. Email the company with these details and tell them you are cancelling the order as per your rights.

I have put in post I understand they have a job to do BUT they should respect doors with no cold callers signs on. Maybe taking the doorbell out is a bit extreme but then being upstairs I don't always hear the door knocking anyway, so therefore it'll make it easier to ignore.
LOL no he wasn't hot, not really, I think with my previous property I was annoyed because I was woken up when I was trying to get 40 winks before doing my night shift ( I was on a split that day, having started work at 5:30am, then was starting again in the evening and not finishing until late at night)
As I said I think I was caught off guard with the whole Government spiel, soon it being compulsory.
I also put in my post that I have cancelled, I popped out but when I got back I got straight onto the phone and cancelled.
I have now changed my sign, specifying no cold callers - this includes ENERGY SUPPLIERS.

I also hate cold callers and I also believe that they should respect anyone who has a no cold callers sign up. I understand they have a job to do but don't disturb me when I have asked you not to - if they then proceed, I think I have every right to have a go or get angry, they are not respecting my personal space, my decision at my property. If I want to change my supplier, buy something from your company etc, I will phone up/ go online myself. PLEASE RESPECT THE NOTE ON MY DOOR!

Cold callers give me the rage!
I hate them all.
Last year the local Tory hopeful knocked, I told him clearly I wasn't interested and he stood against my doorway blocking me from shutting the door Angry
Another year I had a guide dog caller angrily say to me 'it's not like I'm asking you to buy a dog!!'
Oh no, you only want me to take on a puppy, house train it, teach it not to bite everyone, teach it not to wreck my stuff, teach it how to heel and all other basic obedience, take it absolutely everywhere with me and do all the hard work for nearly a year!
It shouldn't be allowed, if people want to switch suppliers, donate to charity etc they can find the information and do it themselves, they don't anyone on commission harassing them.

Well said scrotesonfire, this is exactly my point.
Yes they have jobs to do but go do it somewhere else and don't disturb me.
