AIBU re cough & visiting doctor

My husband has a cough. A horrible cough that is disturbing sleep every night (mine and his) and at least once a day results in a coughing fit that goes on so long it leaves him red faced and having to try and catch a breath.

He says it's just a winter cough, he's not got a cold or anything. He's an ex smoker and he says it's just par for the course. I say he needs to get checked out because this has now been going for at least 5 and a bit weeks (and probably longer because he was working away before the 5 weeks).

I'm actually getting really annoyed at him now. We don't go more than 5 minutes without him coughing, it's wrecking my sleep and something just isn't right (I know that sounds ridiculous, but I know him, I can see him and he's not right). If nothing else he's hurting his throat because his voice sounds different because of all the coughing.

AIBU to tell him to go to the doctor before Christmas and get stroppy if he doesn't (he'll literally only go to the doctor if we end up rowing about it - he just hates going)?

Persistent cough needs to be checked. I agree he needs to go to the docs.

He may well have picked up whooping cough. Or this is a bad winter for viral coughs. But he's an ex smoker, and there's a whole bloody campaign about adults seeing their GP if they've had a cough for over 3 weeks

Yup, he needs to go. He has The Fear because he's an ex-smoker, but it's not going to go away on its own. Tell him it sounds like a chest infection (which is probably is - not a medic) and needs antibiotics.
