To think there should be more media coverage of nearly 100,000 people marching through London?

I can't seem to even find it on the BBC. We were at the demonstration and I think there were possibly more people than that yet it's just not being covered.

I've seen quite a lot of coverage of it www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/sep/12/london-rally-solidarity-with-refugees

Jeremy Corbyn has overshadowed the march somewhat but I've seen his 'recognise your obligations' speech many times this afternoon.

I was at Victoria Coach Station this afternoon, when coach travel was badly disrupted by the impact of this march on the traffic. I sincerely hope they are starved of the oxygen of publicity.

yanbu. Even in the context of Jeremy they could have said x thousand people marched in London and across the UK and panned a helicopter shot or two.

How can that many of us be invisible?

so sad for you Goblin. Terrible inconvenience.

Because they don't want to show it. The BBC has very odd priorities. Have a look at //RT.com instead, plenty of coverage there...

The BBC generally gives very little coverage to protest marches, for some reason. It's frustrating.

Same when there was the free Palestine March last year. They were outside BBC HQ and not a single word was mentioned!

Yes, it just goes to show what a rank organisation the BBC is.

They have of course reported about it now.

Goblin heaven forbid you were in any way inconvenienced by 100 000 people showing their solidarity for some of the world's most desperate people.

BBC - silence - very odd.

Online - Mirror reported solidarity demonstrations across the UK. As did Channel 4 news online AND where you can see two Mumsnwt banners.

Sky News - tv - just now mentioned it.

But disappointingly little coverage, or merged with Corbyn...

Is Goblin being ironic?

If not, she reminds me of the Daily Mail holiday makers complaining about hungry refugees in Kos spoiling the pleasure of rating their icecreams, or the homeless sleeping in the open refugees spoiling their holiday photos... Blush

There were people from all different parts of the political spectrum at the demonstration. Only having the Guardian reporting on it and to have tied it so closely with Jeremy Corbin makes it seem like only those pesky left wing liberals care. How can it not be mainstream news that a huge number of people peacefully turned out and demonstrated? It's really shaken my confidence in the BBC reporting.

The great north run today! Hope there's some decent coverage of that! Guess it takes organisation

There wasn't coverage of the demo that halted Whitehall last Wednesday either.

Most demos in London get zero coverage. Maybe one or two a year, out of the one or two a week that are going on. Bitterly disappointing to those who went on them, but not a reason to think they've been singled out to be ignored.

Stupid idea to have it on the same day as Corbin thing

Report
Spartans · 13/09/2015 08:20

Everytime I go to London there is some sort of demo, never see any of them in the news.

I think people assume they will get in the news and they don't really. I do think having it on the day the labour leader was announced wasn't a great idea, although I assume there were reasons why it was chosen that day.

Sadly the BBC only really cover marches if there is any violence. Then it is a magically a major news story.

They also only cover the London angle. There were so many different marches and vigils across the UK yesterday. Nine in Scotland alone which is unprecedented but only covered on the Scottish news.

Robertaquimby · 13/09/2015 08:29

It was coordinated internationally eg 40,000 people took part in Copenhagen. Not something you could change for one country's opposition party's leadership election.

The international coverage may have been better. A German news channel was filming the Glasgow vigil.

Swap the BBC for RT. Much better.

100,000 people is less than 2% of London population and a tiny amount of the UK population.
33,000 people visited the British museum on one day in August and that was not on the news.

Caroldecker - 10,000 people went to a football match yesterday and it was mentioned by the BBC. The last time I watched BBC Breakfast News its lead story was about Harrison Ford breaking his leg. Yes, thats right the most important news item in the world that day was "man breaks leg". Hmm

There was Lenny of coverage on BBC news last night.

TBF how much coverage can it attract. 100k people marched around London today. Show lots of people with placards. Point made really, and i say this as a person who's not afraid of a protest march herself.

Perhaps we should rethink the nature of the protest march. Politicians don't care; they're not in London on a Saturday to be inconvenienced.

They don't care about the volume of people either. Their were thousands on the anti-Iraq process and it don't blip on Tony's Give-a-shit-a-metre.

So the question really is what would get attention. Now, the Great North Run was on TV for the entire time I was on the running machine in te gym. I get the irony! Wouldn't it have been cool if they'd all worn "SupportRefugees" t-shirts.
