AIBU?

To think you don't plop your toddler down in the middle of a croquet lawn

Where people are actually playing croquet ?

We were at a garden party today and were playing croquet. As were some other people. Some woman and her 1ish year old child were wandering about all over the lawn with said child dragging a mallet with her. They then plopped down right in front of where we were playing, blocking our path to the next hoop. I said rather pointedly to DD "wait for your go as i don't want your ball to hit that little girl". The woman eventually moved but just left the mallet behind where her child had dropped it, in our path

aibu to think that this was really quite rude ?

Yes it was very rude!

Yesterday I was in a large queue at a service station. A woman allowed her 5/6 year old to hit those queuing up.

He came to my 9 year old daughter with his fists up and I said in a loud voice 'don't you dare.
He was running under people's feet as they were walking away from the counter with hot drinks. He got in the way of the poor girl trying to top up the straws and napkins too. She almost tripped over him.

He was throwing himself on the floor screaming and creating. He was trying to pull the bins out and was kicking them.
His parents and I assume grandparents were just looking on not doing anything.

Rude fuckers.

Would have said thoughtless rather than rude, Truffle.
She'd have been rude if she'd said, "Fuck you, hogging this flat bit of grass and all the hoopy things" before hurling her daughter's mallet at you Grin .

Presumably the child was enjoying playing with all the hedgehogs and flamingoes.

I think passive aggressive/rather pointedly comments are more unreasonable and rude. It's amazing what a simple excuse me can do.

I'm back 5 minutes and already I'm drawn into an AIBU thread.

Croquet lawns are a very bad place for toddlers. That game is vicious!

This thread made me laugh like a drain. That woman and toddler were feckin rude. In fact you should have bashed them to death with the mallet a la Midsomer Murders Grin

YANBU. You wouldn't plonk your toddler down on as snooker table, would you?

She was rude or flaky and didn't realise an actual game was on perhaps.

I've not ever played croquet, I've no idea how it is set out.

Thereisiron it was an adult garden party (with afternoon tea and pimms !) not a childrens party. Croquet was one of the games being played (on a dedicated lawn) so it's not as if i started playing in the middle of a garden full of toddlers !

I would have just said 'can you move your child or she's going to get hit by a croquet ball' (in a fictional world where I get invited to garden parties and play croquet Grin)

Plonky woman was def. rude

I'd have stood to one side shaking a packet of artisan quinoa crisps - that would have shifted her! :)

I'm guessing that they were not familiar with the game. Why not just say - sorry, this is the croquet area and there's a game in progress, can you play over there instead?
Not everybody knows the size and shape of a croquet lawn never mind the rules etc.

I'm envisioning Lord Tumble and Aunt Polly giving dirty looks to the mother and toddler and telling them to fuck off Smile
