It’s looking likely that my job could end in Feb next year (government funded project) it’s been a great couple of years, the company allows me to do flexible hours and I am out and about a lot which suits me better than being chained to a desk 24/7. It’s fairly good money for this part of the world too.

I have resigned myself to the fact I have to start job searching though and an agency has got me an interview with a company next week.

Now, one of the perks of my current role is that it is only 3.5 miles from home so my petrol bill and wear and tear on car are both minimal. I drive a very economical little petrol car but still, long journeys do obviously add up!

This role I have an interview for is an extra £2k a year but is 21 miles away instead of 3.5 miles away! I have no idea of working hours etc yet. I am wondering whether I would see any of that extra £2k a year?

I’ll go for the interview whatever but if I’m offered I don’t know. It’s good money and if it was only 10 mins down the road then I wouldn’t hesitate in accepting IF I get offered it, but I know if I do get offered it I’ll be in a bit of a quandary. I need more money really and although it is a bit more, I’m worried it will all be eaten up with petrol. If it was £3-4k more that would be a bit different.

What are the long term prospects?
How many jobs in your field are there in the area - ie what are the odds of getting a better offer before March next year?

No idea re long term prospects yet, would need to discuss that at the interview, I guess it would depend on whether or not there are things like annual bonuses as if there are, it wouldn’t be as much of a problem.

I have been tentatively looking for the past few months and tbh, have struggled to find anything that pays what I’m on now so I’m thinking £2k more is obviously good, however, there are other things I take into consideration too like working hours etc.

I feel I have nothing to lose by going to the interview, I just wish it was a bit more as at least I’d have something left over after the additional petrol has been taken into consideration!

I don’t know how likely it’d be really to find something that pays the same, I’d say fairly likely but it’s a waiting game. I appreciate 20 miles isn’t that far and I’ve always travelled that distance previously but it’s been so nice these past couple of years to have a 10 min daily commute and low petrol bill each month!
