To think this manager is out of line?!

Argh I need an outside perspective, so cross about this.

Dd works varying shifts Monday to Friday.

There was a special weekend event so she worked Saturday. She doesn't normally work Saturdays and didn't want to but did! 8 hours in the hot sun without a fuss.

Dd saw boss today who said she hadn't been rotated on for Saturday and must have rotated herself on therefore she wouldn't get paid. angry

I have said she needs to make a fuss about this. The boss was there Saturday and not once did they say to person A 'you shouldn't be here' or similar. She didn't want to be there and wouldn't have been if she didn't think she had to!

It's a private organisation so no-one higher that she can complain to.

No YANBU of course. If they refuse to pay her its effectively stealing. Who exactly are these clowns?

Is she on a fixed hour contract? Is she salary / per hour? Why did she go in to work - did someone ask / tell her to?

She should speak to whoever told her to work on Saturday and ask him/her to sort it out with the boss.

Is there a printed rota? Was she on the rota for the event or was she asked to work Saturday? Presume she must have been told to work outside her usual hours someway or she wouldn't have been there. So there should be proof she was expected to work and she should be paid.

She's legally an adult. I agree the manager is taking this piss. I feel extra annoyed as dd herself has been a member of the club for over 10 years and knows the boss well.

Threaten him with the small claims court. I didn't get paid once for no apparent reason and it didn't take long to sort it once they realised I was serious!!

Is there anything in writing asking her to work that shift (a text? An email?) If so, she has EVERY right to drop her next shift and send a message via the same medium saying she's taking TOIL

And I would always say - join a union - but I'm a lefty.
