To not want to go camping this weekend?

Dh has suddenly got very excited about camping, we haven't been before. He's bought all the vital stuff and was hoping to go this weekend.

The forecast by us is pretty bad. We are in the midlands and didnt want to go too far just for a couple of nights so we were looking at the Cotswolds / Gloucestershire.
Dh still wants to go. Ds (5) still wants to go. I do not want to go. We aren't experienced campers so are pretty slow at getting the tent up and down. Doing that in heavy rain won't be fun.
I know you take the risk to a degree when you go camping but heavy rain is forecast most of Saturday and part of Sunday. Monday looks better (we'd go Saturday night and Sunday night). My argument is it will be both wet and cold. I can put up with one or the other but not both!

Aibu to want to wait for a warmer / drier weekend? I'm getting the blame for ds being disappointed. However I don't think he will be thrilled when he's stuck in a tent with nothing to do.

You don't have to stay in the tent. There's plenty of nice dry pubs to visit

Let them go and you can stay in the warm and dry.
We aren't going cos if the weather and ive got a camper van!!
Might do one night sun but camping is no fun for me unless it's dry.

Yeah but usual can't enjoy pub If you know it means extra trips to toilet block in the rain!
Go to the pub then home to dry warm bed

Yes I wondered about going for the night on Sunday but it seemed a lot of hassle for one night!
That is what we might have to do though.

Hi us too we've postponed it due to rain / and we have a van. It's no fun if it's too cold n wet to take dc outside

I hate camping. Husband loves camping. I refuse point blank to go. I would let your husband and kids go, and you can stay home where it's warm and dry, with full access to the tv remote and a large bottle glass of wine. Chocolate optional.

YANBU leave it to them to go if they want to camping in the rain is grim (as is camping in the dry)

I hate camping hut have booked to go glamping in the autumn. All the joys of fresh air living, but with proper beds, and someone else putting the damn tent up! (And no equipment to buy, clean, lug to the site or store afterwards.)

See I suggested glamping last year as knew ds would love it. But dh refused! He said he hated all things camping!
I'm not really sure what's happened to him since, midlife crisis?

I think you are being a little bu tbh. I'm not far away and it's a beautiful morning here. If the worst comes to the worst, it's only a bit of bad weather. You can stay during the day and then pack up and come home at bedtime if it's really horrendous (and it may not be, the forecast isn't infallible). It will give you a dry run - ha, see what I did there? - at setting up, realising what you will need/use/have forgotten and modern tents don't take long to set up or take down. If the best comes to the best, your DS will have a ball and a very happy memory - and so might you. And there is no reason why he would be stuck in a tent with nothing to do. Many campsites have games rooms where you can borrow books, board games etc and it's only one tiny bag to take a few books and colouring things. Or get your waterproofs on and go puddle splashing. If you go and really, really hate it, at least you have the moral high ground the next time you say no!

I love camping but it's still too cold overnight at the moment imo.

YANBU to be apprehensive but see if you can make it work before cancelling.

If you haven't booked, look for the area with the best weather forcast and go there. The night time temperatures in some area are very mild. For example, London according to BBC had rain from 4 on saturday. But is dry most of sunday and lovely on monday. Minimum temp is showing as 9 so it is mild. It is worth driving another hour for good weather I can promise you.

In terms of staying warm, take layers to wear (including in bed).Take hot water bottles and extra blankets. Put blankets under you as well as over and put something on the floor under the beds. Try not to get to cold before you go inside. It is surprising how much warmer you are once in the tent and all zipped up.

Bases on the forecast above, plan to get set up before the rain and then go out for tea! Pick somewhere with a pub onsite or nearby. Take indoor and outdoor toys (we take lego/transformers, cards for snap, colouring and the ipad). It is a big help if you can take down in the dry. Enjoy!

It's no fun tho, yes you can wrap up at night but it's so cold you have to go to bed so early.
We have heating and a tv in our van but if we sit wTching tv by the fire we may as well be at home

We also have a campervan and there's no way I would go away in it just yet, let alone a tent! Apart from the rain, it's bloody cold at night, went down to 3 deg here last night ...... no fun camping in that. I need balmy evenings, sitting outside the tent/van with wine, watching the world go by, not having to go to bed at 7pm just to get warm.

May half term is the earliest we would consider going camping.

So no YANBU.

well I'd go, but my camping is my favourite thing to do. And some of our best trips are those when we'd been freezing and wet; in retrospect at least! It's all that bonding in the face of adversity you get to do in a confined space where the only entertainment is a pack of cards and a damp dog who wants to cuddle. Wine helps

I'd go on the Sunday for the 1 night. That way you get the better weather and still get to go camping for the experience but hopefully with no rain.

We have a camper van and I would go this weekend if we weren't busy but I'd not be so keen in a tent in the pouring rain.

We have already been in our van, a few weekends which were lovely but we go to a site with indoor pool,soft play and a nice club house so only really ate and slept in the van and had the heating on the whole time!!
We are cheats.
