AIBU?

When you injure yourself REALLY badly but there isn't a single mark to show for it

I just felt like I'd cut myself really badly on the side of a packet of tomatoes and when I looked, it hadn't even broken the skin. There was no blood despite squeezing it really hard and not even a mark to show people for sympathy.

It's like when you bark your shin really hard, or stub your toe and think, 'Oh that's an A&E job. My sock is filling up with blood. My toe is severed. I reckon you can see through to bone' and when you look, there isn't even a bruise. AIBU to think that's really really unfair? You're in agony, but you don't have anything to show for it.

I either have a really low pain-threshold, or my skin is 50% titanium.

Grin yanbu. I agree completely. Walking into a table and smacking your hip is the same. I expect a bruise at the least. Sadly not. Most disappointing.

A massive clunk on the head is the worst. So painful, but never does a trickle of blood appear from your hairline that would make everyone gasp and feel sorry for you. You just have to lie collapsed on the ground, groaning and trying not to cry, while everyone watches, waiting for you to stop it.

I bruise like a peach so I always have a bruise. Sometimes I wake up with mysterious bruises. I bruise if people even look at me funny.

But YANBU. It's amazing how much grubbing your toe or wanging your elbow can hurt.

Completely agree with this! I often bang my hip on the table corner, and usually act like I've been shot, and dramatically look at my hip for gaping wound to show off so I can some sympathy, it's usually just a pathetic attempt at a bruise that appears Sad

It's the flip side to the mystery bruises that appear isn't it. I'm always hoping for expecting a bruise after a proper wallop into something, not for sympathy, oh no, but never get one. Then DH will point out bruises somewhere entirely different, often ones that are black or purple, and I'll have no idea how I did them.

I wonder if I just bruise in an entirely different place from the injury.

As an aside, I stubbed my toe a few months back and ripped the nail off. My sock filled with blood. It was 1000000000 times more painful than any other toe-stubbing I have experienced.

I had the exact opposite of this, I broke my leg badly, open fracture, completely smashed, and I announced I had broken it and needed an ambulance but I was so 'fine' everyone thought I was exaggerating and I should 'get up and walk it off' !! Until the paramedic took my boot off and the bone was poking out Confused

I agree, although have occasionally been caught out by a late bruise which has appeared several days after the original injury. I managed to get something down the side of a fingernail last week which really cocking hurt but was invisible to the naked eye. I was almost pleased to discover that there is obviously something still stuck in there as it unexpectedly swelled up and went bright red yesterday and my husband was very sympathetic after I showed him my other finger for comparison and moved into the light so he could see it.

I broke a bone which poked out spectacularly. Is that the kind of thing you feel you're missing out on? That injury (next grade up from REALLY bad) didn't hurt unless I moved. To call ambulance, I had to move.

I had something similar recently when i walked full force into a table. It was a set of six desks at work so everyone looked at me as i had shaken the whole desk! It hurt like a bitch but it barely left a mark - a tiny pale yellow bruise appeared a couple of days later then disappeared!! I felt like my whole leg should have gone purple!! It's a bit annoying really - you feel you need some mark to justify the pain you felt!! Grin

Urgh to bones poking out. Ouch.

I did once cut my head open falling off my bike, but I was spectacularly drunk a bit tipsy and didn't feel a thing. There was a LOT of blood. And yes, I know it was unbelievably stupid to get on the bike in that state. It won't happen again! I got a lot of sympathy then, but only from DH as I wasn't willing to admit my stupidity to anyone else!

Wanging was deliberate but grubbing should have been stubbing. Grin

I don't think anyone here wants a horrible injury! It's just weird something can hurt like hell and not leave a sign. Hope your broken bone healed well, prole.

MrsLowe14 · 28/01/2015 14:49

Prole I think it's shock isn't it, I knew it was very broken but it wasn't screaming agony. So much so that the paramedic hopped me to the ambulance!!

I was knocked down by a car a few years ago. I was very grateful to walk (hobble) away and not be injured apart from being a bit sore for a few days. But I was annoyed there wasn't giant bruise where I was hit to show off! Blush

GlitzAndGigglesx · 28/01/2015 14:55

I knocked myself out slight exaggeration at work today. What actually happened was I was kneeling for something and as I got up I smashed the top of my head on a crate of butter. Felt lightheaded for a short time but there wasn't even a red mark Angry

Definitely no one would want a horrible injury and I have sympathy for all of you that have. Shudder. I just want any minor 'wang or grub' that I do suffer, to have a massive bruise that matches the level of pain. It's just the inadequacy of the bruise that's sometimes so annoying.

rhiwrites grubbing is a great word.

Oh yanbu! My finger is STILL hurting from it's run in with the side of a plastic bottletop yesterday...I thought I'd sliced it open but not a scratch!

Report
DoJo · 28/01/2015 14:56

Stokes - that is harsh! I would expect at least a bruise in every colour of the rainbow and probably some additional scrapes and oversized plasters for getting run over by a car!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/01/2015 14:56

When I burned myself really badly with boiling oil (full thickness in one area) it just felt as thought something cool had washed over my hand. The pain didn't kick in until much later. It was so weird, I was absolutely shaking in a&e but not in pain.

Report
DoJo · 28/01/2015 14:57

I also just remembered on that went the other way - I cut my hand on a frozen crumpet and had to explain the bleeding injury to everyone at work as I tried to find a plaster large enough to keep it contained! It was impressive, but didn't really hurt, so I am wondering if there is some injury-karma at work that evens things out...!

MrsLowe14 · 28/01/2015 15:00

A frozen crumpet?! Not one of those cake type things surely?!

BlackeyedSusan · 28/01/2015 15:02

the times I have been convinced I am going to findmy little toe hanging off, bone showing, or big toe bleeding and shredded.... have never been as dramatic as feared.

on the other hand, I have a circular bruise on my knee with the pattern of the elbow of my jumper in two white lines across it.

how the fuck can I have bruised my knee by leaning on it with an elbow when sometimes I can bump myself so hard and see no mark?

Stinkle · 28/01/2015 15:05

I really, really hurt my toe last night, venturing into my DD2's absolute pit of a bedroom in the dark

I hopped around a lot while holding my toe and I was convinced I'd at least ripped my toe nail off and be pouring blood

Nothing. Not a mark. I couldn't even swear a lot as DD was fast asleep and I didn't want to wake her up

I also got hit by a car years ago, they were reversing out so very slow but the bumper caught the side of my knee and it hurt like buggery. No bruise then either

On the other hand, I gave myself a spectacular black eye with a spud gun. I kind of swung it up and hit myself in the face. It didn't hurt in the slightest and I barely registered I'd done it, until hours later when I looked in the mirror

Fell off a cantering horse, landed on my (capacious) arse. Landed heavily enough to leave an imprint of said arse in the rubber shavings on the arena floor. I was soooo sore the next day - back, arse, shoulder, all really stiff and aching. But not one single bruise in sight to elicit sympathy rather than laughter from DH...
