AIBU?

aibu to have a little cry about mice in the house

I discovered mice in the under sink cupboard in kitchen - food recycle bin. Put traps down, caught some, dh taught me to empty them blergh as he works away. After catching a few dh thought problem solved i wasnt because that little foam insulation balls from inside walls kept appearing near the traps.

tonight one ran along sitting room wall (nearly cried). Put trap straight down and caught it 30 mins later. So stripped sittingroom down and cleaned floor (droppings around walls and under sofa sofa - not loads but enough and scraps of plastic). This then sent alarm bells ringing as there are scraps of plastic on the stairs and upstairs hall - carpet brown so hard to see droppings but couldn't see any.

Went into one of my dc room and found droppings (about 8/9 in a corner and along a wall). I had checked the room when first found the mice but guessing there's more or they are on the move. Then I had a sneaky cry. I can't sleep now as freaked out.

I'm going to get poison tomorrow and put it in the airing cupboard which is in boys room - they can't reach in and under kitchen units. I can't work out how they are moving about. Iv filled all the holes I can see and I'm going to strip boys room tomorrow

YANBU. At all. I cry, too, but we have an old house and, however assiduous we are, we seem to get an annual one/two. Snap traps are very effective and I've had to deal with them, too, as DH travels away a lot. They are only a £1 or so so, if it is really grim, I bin the corpse and trap as one and get out a new one ...

TBH if there are mice then they are many! When I was little we had mice, trapped 32 within 2 days! Don't get upset, don't panic but there are probably more. Put traps in all ares where there is food and also where droppings have been seen, check the oven (we caught loads of the buggers in there). It will be over soon, just prepare yourself for more before it is over. Good luck Smile

If there mate mice there are rats. Get a lion.

Fanjango · 20/01/2015 00:30

By the way they can squeeze through any un-feazably small gap so don't worry about gaps. Get the traps, bait with peanut butter and you'll be sorted.

if there are mice there are rats. Although I'm sure they are also mating.

Yes the gaps on it need to be minuscule.

Seriously get or borrow a cat.

Poor you they are buggers to get rid of.

Do mice mate with rats? Eeww!

Report
Lweji · 20/01/2015 00:35

When we got our kitten our mouse visitors completely disappeared.

Careful, though. I was watching this documentary, right, about a cat and a mouse, and the mouse hit the cat with a frying pan! And there was a mouse in a nappy, too. And a talking duckling.

Do mice mate with rats?
No.
Mice and rats do have lots of babies, though.

Lweji · 20/01/2015 00:37

RandomNPC, that's just fake. In my house, it's the cat who steals the cheese. I should get a rat to keep him off the food.

If you have mice your extremely unlikely to have ears aswell. Ears are dominant and will actively hunt and kill mice to protect their territory

Good job, Ears are bastards.

Don't panic purple. We had mice in our old house and on MN people always say that if you see 1 then there will be loads. Its not always true. We caught 2 or 3 and then stopped seeing them. In our new house which is more rural we caught one, found out where they were coming in, blaocked it up and never saw another one.

We used a combo of snappy traps, those plug in mice scarer things and hole blocking up. The best plug in scarer is one that send a sonic noise round the whole electrical circuit of the house (as long as you don't have a hamster or similar). Find out where they are getting in - you can do this by putting flour down and they leave mousey footprints on their way home. Block up the holes with steel wool.

Make sure you clear up all crumbs and don't leave food about.

Its no fun but if you really keep at it you can conquer them!

I had a little cry about them too. At times I felt I lived in some kind of biblical plague zone - we had mice, moths, head lice, worms and a rat.

Well if it makes you feel better I read the other day that if you have mice, you won't have rats, because the rats drive out the mice no idea if that is true though.

I once came home to be greeted by a horrified dh. He'd pulled out ds's bed to look at the radiator valve and seen loads of mouse droppings. I asked how big and he held up his finger and thumb about 5cm apart. "Argh (I cried) if they are that big we have a rat!". Well dh bravely let me go off to deal with it, and I started dragging dust covered toys out from under ds's bed. Nothing was chewed - very strange. I didn't find anything until I had almost disappeared headfirst under the bed and then I did. The 'droppings' were dead woodlice! Bloomin' dh and his dodgy eyesight!

Obviously the stuff under the bed was in dire need of a good clear out Blush but I'd rather have done it while not in fear of mutilation by giant rodent.

YANBU - mice are irritating and its a lot of work to get rid of them and clean up after them. Mice and rats are nothing to do with each other. If you have one it doesn't mean you have the other.

If you have loads of them it might be better to get in a pest control company - if not at least make sure you had a really good Google. Not all mice bait is the same. Have a Google about which ones are best.

Mice pee everywhere Sad

Our cat brought a mouse in and our 2 grown up sons were home while we were out.

Got home to wonder why there was a large piece of cheese in the kitchen floor!

The dds told us they had tried to entice it out of hiding with a lump of processes fucking cheese. A wild mouse not a cartoon mouse!

Fecking idiots!

Report
Lweji · 20/01/2015 00:56

You are lucky the cheese was still there. My cat would have stolen it from the mice.

Mice like nutella or peanut butter if you are baiting traps. Well the ones in my mum's house do, she is waging war with the little critters atm.

Mil is coming armed with a plug in thingy. Dh is preparing for deep clean when he comes home at weekend. More tired than anything as thought we had them. Seriously thinking of enticing next doors cats in - the bloody owe for pooping in the garden

Best traps are these black plastic snap ones as very easy to get rid of dead mouse. Coming quite a dab hand, sigh
