AIBU?

AIBU to wonder why in God's name anyone would want to be a hipster?

I thought of this because of the cereal cafe thread (although I think those two seem like nice lads).

I mean, hipsters are a bit of a joke now right? People who are so achingly desperate to be different but they're slavishly following their own crowd like sheep.

I look at them and I just think it's such a pretentious pile of arse and it just shows an obsession with image and outward appearances above all else. And having the right sort of job in 'meeja' or 'creative industries' and hanging with the right crowd. It's sort of a modern type of snobbery which has a lot more in common with their Grandparents obsessions with class and outward appearances by stone cladding their drive and working for the right company and shopping in the right supermarket than they'd like to admit.

I mean, does anybody else look at hipsters and think 'Oh you're so cool' apart from other hipsters? They just seem like the punchline to a joke to me now.

Its no different from any group of people like goths/emos/grungers. All try so very hard to be different but are actually all the same.

There are a few areas though that are full of proper hipsters as in everyone is one so that's "normal. They are the ones that shop in charity shops though rather than urban outfitters.

But they're so hip, hop and happening man.

And I do love men who own beards and books.

My sil is dating a hipster, he's the most boring man alive. But I like his glasses.

This has to be the only piece of hipster commentary ever to reference block paving in driveways, surely. Amazing.

No, I laugh (inwardly).

I know someone like this. A year ago he would be partying in strip clubs. Now he has this horrible beard and holes in his ears

The only sure fire way to tell if someone you're talking to is, in fact, a hipster is to ask them "are you a hipster?". If they respond no, and turn their casette player back on, you can be sure you're dealing with a hipster

The thing is I don't think hipsters ARE like goths or emos, because they're not trying to be part of it. Mostly I think they don't even think of themselves as hipsters. That's the cruel joke of the disease. They think they just happen to like beards/craft beer/cycling/whatever little niche of the hipster world they're filling, and they probably think hipsters are awful too.

The true mark of the beast is conspicuous consumption in some form, IMO. Normally a form that reveres the aesthetics of items.

So what are typical hipster products / items?

I used to think I was a hipster before there was such a thing as a hipster. I'm getting old now and no longer care to be a hipster. I suggest there's always been hipsters, it's just that we're all probably getting old Xmas Grin

In the sixth form I realised I wasn't one of the individuals because I didn't wear a German army coat.

Maybe I could grow one of those tiny under-lip beards and become a hipster? Cool daddio! I'd be a real hep cat!!

maybe just leave people to dress how they want to without scathing judgements. I dont think hipsters are causing any world problems

Has anyone heard the dickhead song?

Youtube it if not. It's spectacular.

I think the more variety of people we have the better. Far too many people feel they have to fit in one mould.

Aren't hipsters just 30 something indie kids? They all like Oasis when they were 14.

The irony of hipsters is they don't think they are following a trend/crowd. They all believe themselves to be truly individual. But they really are all the same. They dress the same. They look the same. They listen to the same music and talk about coffee like it's some kind of religion.

And these are grown ups. If they were teens who needed to follow a group as an expression of their identity/to fit in, I'd understand it.

I watched a Simpsons episode where homer tries to become a hipster. Springfield becomes over run with hipsters until it becomes a 'cool' place to live-then they pack up in horror and move somewhere unsuspecting.
