To turn down a permanent job

I have been offered a new job. It is permanent and very close to home. Currently I have one year left on a contract and travel approx 30mins. Contract may be renewed but it is public sector so who knows!

However, new job is less money (about £1000 a year take home despite being more hours) and it will cause me huge childcare problems. At the moment I do school hours but in new job I will have to rely on friends and DH who has said he can do one day at home but has a v v stressful job and struggles to get away as it is.

My current job is really flexible and I can do my hours to suit, but new one less, certainly to start with. My childcare issues may be temporary as they are related to my aunt's ill health which should start to improve by May time but this is by no means certain. She was our only carer and no places now at after school care. She became ill just after I was offered the job.

AIBU to turn down a permanent job just because it will make my life easier for six months?

School hours jobs are rarer than rocking horse shit so I wouldnt give that up for anything.

Not at all permanent means very little these days particularly for the first two years of employment. Do what works for your family.

I'm overseas and have just today turned down what would be "a respectable pay for the position" job to take up a "rubbish pay for same position" job because it's at my kids' school. The respectable pay would mean needing someone to drop off and pick up the kids, we've had a rubbish year and the kids (or maybe me) need more stability than that.

So nop, not unreasonable. Or if you are then so am I!

did you apply for this permanent job with your circumstances were different or are you just getting cold feet?

When I applied Aunt was helping with childcare and I was doing 3 days so hours in new job would have been fine. More working hours but same time out of the house due to less travelling.

She became ill after I applied and I changed to 4 days school hours in current role.

I wouldn't. Your current job suits your situation and you have a whole year left, so maybe something better will come up or they might renew your contract. I think you should hold on to this job.
