I'm getting married in a few days and have come down with a cold.
I don't want to be ill on my wedding day... Please help

CaffeLatteIceCream Sun 23-Nov-14 21:30:41

Eat well, sleep well, lots of fluids. Paracetamol will help with symptoms.

Other than that, there's not much to be done. Sorry sad

If it's any consolation, I had a cold last week that came and went within 2 days. My son had the same. So maybe yours will prove to be mild too.

Congrats and good luck smile

Nothing works for a cold. Sorry. You'll get spammed with all sorts of remedies but if any of them worked they'd be worth millions and be in every chemist.

Joolsy Sun 23-Nov-14 21:32:41

Take some Night Nurse at night (obviously) - helps you get a good nights' sleep. That's the only thing I enjoy about having a cold!

OraProNobis Sun 23-Nov-14 21:34:57

Sleep and sweat it out on night one if possible. Dose yourself to the max and double duvet - Night Nurse is good to knock you out. It won't cure you but I really do believe one night of good sleep and being super warm does help.

AlmostAWife Sun 23-Nov-14 21:35:17

grocklebox I'm afraid of that, but I'm willing to give anything a try.

On the bright side, it is only a cold. It could be a lot worse.
At worst I'll feel a little crappy, but at least It's not flu or chicken pox etc

I'd just rather not have a cold. And all this time I was worried about breaking out in a bout of acne! gave up chocolate and everything!

pinkcheese Sun 23-Nov-14 21:35:24

Max strength cold/flu medication, every four hours. Try to get one with a night time dose (no caffeine) so you get some sleep while not bunged up. I find that the decongestants mean I dont end up with a red sore nose and the day-time caffeinated doses help me have enough energy to eat properly, drink lots of water, and take my mind off it. Good luck and congrats on the wedding grin

MehsMum Sun 23-Nov-14 21:35:53

To unblock nose: Olbas oil.
To quell tickly throat so you can get to sleep: Sudafed.

Nothing makes it go away, but those two are my standbys: palliatives which keep me functioning.

AlmostAWife Sun 23-Nov-14 21:37:39

How much will night nurse knock me out? (obviously I know it's different for everyone)
As I'm on my own with the kids tonight, with a little one that wakes up some nights still, I don't really want to be so asleep I don't wake her

I haven't got any in the house anyway, but I know someone close by who will if I need it

TheFirstOfHerName Sun 23-Nov-14 21:37:53

Paracetamol. Sleep. Stay hydrated.

BlameItOnTheBogey Sun 23-Nov-14 21:38:45

Take echinacea. I swear it works and I am super skeptical.

vienna1981 Sun 23-Nov-14 21:52:19

Benylin Day and Night if they still make it. Recommended by local pharmacy. Works for me.

All the best smile.

fluffyraggies Sun 23-Nov-14 21:55:00

I was going to say obas oil for keeping your nose clear on the big day, but then thought of you wafting up the isle in a cloud of menthol grin maybe not!

Hope it gets gone quickly OP.

DougalTheCheshireCat Sun 23-Nov-14 21:58:39

Echinacea. Also if it is starting with a sore throat, gargle several times a day with diluted tcp (it gives instructions for the dilution on the bottle). It kills the infection at source, I have stopped several colds in their tracks witha couple of days of this.

Makes you smell like a hospital though.

Have a great wedding !

AlmostAWife Sun 23-Nov-14 21:58:47

fluffyraggies grin I could put it in all the flower arrangements, Ward off a cold for everybody else!

This is what I get for having a bloody November wedding! Haha!

Besmonetha Sun 23-Nov-14 22:01:18

Congratulations on your wedding.

If you have that horrid blocked feeling in your nose and sinuses, get a neti pot and use it a couple of times a day, or get a saline nasal spray like Sterimar (or own brand).

like some other people have said echinacea or even something like berocca.

AND lots of rest before here and then. LOTS.

Good luck. Enjoy your day, I hope that it is beautiful.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange Sun 23-Nov-14 22:05:44

Vicks on the feet with sock on before bed, don't ask me why this works but the symptoms are a lot better.

AlmostAWife Sun 23-Nov-14 22:10:18

Thank you for all the suggestions.
Thank you for all the good wishes too everyone :D

Pinkrose1 Sun 23-Nov-14 22:10:37

Echinacea, odourless garlic pills about 12 a day, not on the day, don't risk it , vit C, day nurse and night nurse (agree with knocking yourself out for hours) lots of Vaseline around your nose to stop the redness.

CheckpointCharlie Sun 23-Nov-14 22:14:09

YY was going to say eat loads of garlic, but not on your wedding day!
And berocca plus tonnes of garlic works for me.

Mostlyjustaluker Sun 23-Nov-14 22:15:48

Lots of sleep. As much of it as you can manage to fit in.

specialsubject Sun 23-Nov-14 22:16:14

as noted, nothing actually works - the cold will go whether you take the quackery or not.

what you can do is ease the symptoms on the day.

but he'll be happy to marry you anyway.Congratulations!!

Janethegirl Sun 23-Nov-14 22:23:31

As other pps have said, night nurse is great (for nighttime) and day nurse for day time grin.
Hope you're in fine fettle for your wedding. wine is good too.

pinksquash13 Sun 23-Nov-14 22:24:37

I swear by oranges. The big ones. I normally have 2 or 3 a day when I'm ill. Also put germaline/savlon on your nose morning and night to ensure it doesn't become sore. I also take stronger sudafed that I get over the counter. They are round red tablets...you only take 1 every 4 hours unlike the standard sudafed. Have a lovely wedding day.

Amethyst24 Sun 23-Nov-14 22:27:12

Happinose is great stuff - won't stop the cold but will stop your nose going all red and flaky from blowing it.
