To ask friend not to smoke outside when my washing is hanging out?

I don't smoke, but if anyone that visits wants to they can go outside the back door. I have my washing out there at the moment and asked a friend not to smoke there and go out the front. Is that stupid? Is it likely to make it smell or will it just go up in the air?
They said ok, looked at me a bit funny and then put it out blush

I'm an ex-smoker and I don't think you need to worry. My friend had a cigarette in my garden sitting directly under the washing line and I couldn't smell it on the washing, even sniffing specifically for it.

I don't blame you I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, and I can definitely smell it even when people smoke outside blowing smoke out down wind. It's a horrible, distracting smell. I don't even let smokers in my house sit on my furniture if they smell. I'm probably precious, but I'd rather be unreasonable then be unable to sit on my couch and enjoy a movie ever again. I've made my DH strip down in the kitchen when he's been around people that smoke. That smell just sticks to everything. I have sensory issues though, so tuning out a feint scent would just be out of the realm of possibility for me.

I love sniffing washing, especially bedding wink

WorraLiberty Mon 26-May-14 16:21:52

We could probably smell a Sparrow's fart if we all sniffed our washing grin

Im going to get it in soon, will give it a good sniff and see if I can smell anything

You probably will, through sheer determination wink

TestingTestingWonTooFree Mon 26-May-14 16:14:31

I think YANBU, I wouldn't be happy. I have smelt smoke on my clothes after being near a smoker.

I'm a non-smoker too, as is DP!

4littleones I had just nipped to the shop for milk for a cup of tea so wasn't here when he lit it

You are being ultra precious. I doubt you could even find a molecule of smoke in your washing.

WorraLiberty Mon 26-May-14 16:05:44

You are DEFINITELY not being unreasonable and I think only a smoker would think you are.

I'm not a smoker and I think the OP is BU.

Unless they were standing there, blowing the cigarette smoke directly onto the washing, a few puffs of smoke will disappear on the breeze.

There's probably more chance of it smelling of various cooking spices around dinner time, or a distant BBQ.

PixieofCatan Mon 26-May-14 16:02:51

Marrow Maybe! I was talking about this with my boss the other week, she's an ex-smoker too and supposedly so is her ex, yet she was saying that she swears that she can smell it on her daughters laundered clothes when he drops her back home after contact.

susiedaisy Mon 26-May-14 15:57:41

Yab a bit U. One ciggy isn't going to do much damage.

4littleones Mon 26-May-14 15:57:28

It's OK but would of been better to ask before they lit it surely?

Feminine Mon 26-May-14 15:54:57

My neighbours smoke on both sides. I am getting a new rotary dryer to place far away from the back door.--ex smoker--

RebeccaCloud9 Mon 26-May-14 15:54:16

You are DEFINITELY not being unreasonable and I think only a smoker would think you are. Smokers have no idea how smelly cigarettes are and it would 100% make your washing smell. Someone at my work smokes and you can literally smell where he has walked through school after he has had a cigarette, it follows him like a trail.

Marrow Mon 26-May-14 15:54:11

Are all of is saying YANBU ex smokers then?grin

OddBoots Mon 26-May-14 15:52:00

Smoke does cling horribly to wet clothing so yanbu but maybe if your friend wants to smoke you could offer to go for a walk with them?

HelenHen Mon 26-May-14 15:50:51

Yanbu... Ex smoker here too and I could smell it! sad

HannerHet Mon 26-May-14 15:50:10

Glad some are agreeing with me!

YANBU. I'd ask the same. I can tell when my housemates have been smoking next to my washing, maybe that's because I'm a ex-smoker though and seem to smell the slightest hint of it everywhere hmm

Marrow Mon 26-May-14 15:47:22

If it is a small yard then no YANBU. You don't want your washing stinking of smoke.

TalisaMaegyr Mon 26-May-14 15:46:25

Is the yard covered, or is it in the open air? If it's the latter, YABU and precious.

ThatBloodyWoman Mon 26-May-14 15:46:12

II don't think what you are asking is outrageous, but I really think its entirely ott.

However, if it means you feel happy and they still get a fag, there's no real harm done.

yellowdinosauragain Mon 26-May-14 15:46:01

I don't think it's at all unreasonable to ask a friend, visiting your home, to smoke in a different place because the washing is out. Or why some of you are calling the op precious or sniggering hmm. Yes, it might not make a difference but the op has said she was right next to the washing. I wouldn't like this.
