AIBU?

to ask you to STOP BLOODY SNIFFING!

For the last three mornings, I have stood on a packed commuter train next to A Sniffer. By the end of each 35 minute journey, I have meticulously plotted the long and painful death of each one of them.

I know colds are horrible. I know you probably feel like shite, and you're having to drag yourself into the office to have a meeting with Dull Kevin from Accounts when you'd rather be in bed with a hot water bottle and a cup of tea and some paracetamol. I do have some sympathy.

But please. Can I just ask that, if you wake up a bit sniffly, you TAKE A FUCKING TISSUE OUT WITH YOU? AND FUCKING USE IT? Otherwise I will be forced to push you onto the tracks.

Thank you.

Yes I hate it.

I am in a waiting room just now and a woman opposite me is doing it.

I want to glare at her.

But..she is an elderly nun.

I have a colleague who does it all day in the office. He may have it mentioned in his annual appraisal.

Why don't you offer them a tissue? That's what I do with a colleague of mine who sniffs, rather than use a tissue, when she has a cold. I feel it makes my point (STOP SNIFFING!) but in a polite way. (Is that passive aggressive??)

I had someone who was here a few months ago doing work, coughing and sniffing, they were here again today coughing and sniffing again. I guess they have some sort of allergy they are not getting looked at properly if at all.

The worst bus journey I've ever had in my life was when I had a runny nose and no tissue. Longest hour of my life. Sure I was probably annoying other people, but if one person had thought to offer me a tissue instead of glaring at me then the situation would have been resolved.

I'm so sorry, I think you've been standing next to my DH every morning. Chronic sinusitis but that doesn't make it any less irritating

Report
Lottapianos · 27/03/2014 14:01

I had a sniffer sit next to me on the bus recently. She was sniffing about every 10 seconds and it was driving me bananas. I offered her a tissue with a smile, she looked shocked, took it, said thank you, put it in her bag and carried on sniffing! AAAAAAAGH!

YANBU in any way OP. It's disgusting behaviour. The bus sounds like a bloody pig farm some days.

I wish allergic rhinitis on all of you....I don't really, but you get the gist!

Constant tissue use gives you a very sore nose, if it isn't a cold, but the months of [or year round in some cases] allergy related sniffing, wiping with a tissue is not an option.

Im not so bad now, but suffered terribly as a child, it irritated my Mum no end, it was awful knowing that something you really couldn't help would get you into trouble [that was how it felt at the time]

Medicines can only help so much, most are pretty useless actually.

EthelDorothySusan · 27/03/2014 14:09

There is no need to snip with allergies, if you have the correct medication.

Report
teaandthorazine · 27/03/2014 14:13

I have considered taking tissues out with me to hand over, given that handing them out probably couldn't be considered any more passive-aggressive than my eye-rolling and hurrumphing Grin

That's not true really.

I have lost count of the different types of medication Ive had over the years, some work for one aspect, but not another etc. Some are just shit. The 'best' was the nasal sprays that made me sneeze and made it even worse!

Do you think people enjoy sniffing, having a constantly irritated nasal passage and being unable to breath normally?

Couldn't agree more OP. I had one behind me the other day & it was like Chinese water (mucus?) torture.

I'm full of a cold at the moment- its either sniff or blow my nose every 5 minutes- very noisily...or have snot running down my face but that's not really an option.
I think in some cultures is considered very rude to blow your nose in public Hmm

amberleaf I have allergic rhinitis. It doesn't make someone else's sniffing (especially the really "juicy" sort) any less annoying.

Report
AmberLeaf · 27/03/2014 14:22

Maybe not Dido, but it should make you more understanding.

If I hear someone sniffing like that, I just feel sorry for them.

I sat down in glorious exit seats on a transatlantic flight - a full transatlantic flight mind - to discover that next to me was sat a sniffer. Not just sniffs but those really chewy sniffs that make you feel sick.

After about 10 minutes I snapped and produced a tissue for him and asked if he could possibly blow his nose. He refused saying it was medical and was obviously offended.

So then I had a sniffer giving me evil stares all the way across the ocean.

Sorry it doesn't! I am just horrible though :)

HauntedNoddyCar - ooooh yes, those big juicy, chewy sniffs where you can hear the mucus rattling up and down the sinuses, sometimes followed by a full-on 'hack/snurk/swallow' combo.

Fills me with murderous intent.

But what if blowing it doesn't help in the slightest?

Report

I once asked an exam invigilator to ask someone to stop sniffing. I was becoming murderous.

I spoke to her afterwards and apologised for my lack of tolerance. Poor woman had terrible hay fever.

But this was my degree.
