Next door neighbour noise

My next door neighbour plays his music too loud, we have asked politely twice before today that he turns it down and he has grumbled but turned it down, the over time the volume creeps back up again.

When at its loudest there is a constant humming/buzzing all over our house, and even if we up our volume slightly it makes it worse. I have never retaliated by turning ours up to an unreasonable level.

Today he was washing his car in the street (like he does most weekends, he seems to have a jet wash obsession as he is forever cleaning his driveway and car) and blasting music from the car window. This I have let go, but drives me mad as this also takes over whatever we are listening to in our house.

My partner went out and politely asked that it is turned down, and he point blank refused, said we are pathetic, need to show some consideration for his love of music, need to get a grip etc etc etc. my partner said he would seek help from the council regarding noise pollution if that is how he feels, and he responded by saying he will make it worse for us, and said he can be a nasty bastard and could have people with shotguns here in a moments notice.

He eventually calmed down, the conversation ended ok and he turned it down, but I feel a little unnerved.....

Police wrt to threat of guns! I would report that, is he a tenant? If so, report to landlord too. Environmental health for noise?

The police have to be involved OP, he has told you he is a nasty bastard and can get people with shotguns Shock normal people do not react like this.

Did anyone else see/hear this?

Nobody else heard, just me and my parter.

I don't really want to involve the police if he quietens down, that is all i want. It could make things so difficult living next door...

We are not bad people we just want to enjoy our home and family life!

He accused us of slamming our wheely bin lid deliberately to annoy him and confessed he does the same to get us back !!!?? We put rubbish our once every couple of days and didnt realise it was being "slammed" nor did we notice he was doing it lol!!

Have you children? If you and your DH want to sit there like sitting ducks then fair enough, not fair on innocent children to be shot by a self confessed nasty bastard, because Mum and Dad don't want to protect them.

Are you in Scotland by any chance?

He sounds slightly unhinged

I would inform the police and log a complaint. If it turns unpleasant at a later date it gives you a but if a head start on the complaint.

Is it possible to log the incident with the police but not have the neighbour know about it ? Just so its on record?

I just hope the noise stops and that is an end to it. I don't want the stress of involving police if it can be avoided...

I would call 111 and make a report to the police. Not to actually get them round but to have it on file.
So he makes all this row but gets upset at you closing your bin lid. What an arse. What do the neighbours on the other side think? If he is making that much of a row outside then it won't be just you he is upsetting.

Sorry, cross post there.
The police won't do anything about the noise, but I would imagine that they would be very interested with the mention of guns. If you say you don't want him to know I expect they will do just that. I imagine that if he is as nasty as he says then he won't be unknown to them.

Some people seem to have a natural urge to fight their neighbours and he sounds like one of them.

I understand that you don't want to antagonise him but if I understand you aright he threatened you with lethal violence? At which point I think at least logging this with the police might be prudent if you plan to stick around.

I think either you sell and move while you can do so without having a formal complaint that you have to declare to buyers, or you need to start informing police/ other authorities as appropriate, and logging his behaviour.

As previously said I would expect the police to be very interested in someone who is threatening (however indirectly) to have you shot. That's really not normal behaviour.

Call 111 and talk to them. Do it now and report back. You shouldn't feel afraid in your own home.

Ring environmental health tomorrow morning. They will investigate for you.

Poor you, you have my sympathy as someone who has been in similar situation. Luckily I was renting with friends at the time and we moved but this is not always possible and it does start to really affect you. I would go to citizens advice and ask them what to do esp about involving the police because I can understand your concern of the situation escalating if authorities are involved. Hope you get situation sorted soon. Good luck

Backinthering why would you ask if this was in Scotland?
