There's a shopping centre near my office with a posh furniture store in it called Grange. I popped in to see if they had a particular sofa and the guy in the shop took a call, referring to it as Gronzj (iyswim). I nearly had to leave the shop laughing, it's worse than Cl'aam for Clapham or Saint Reatham for Streatham. AIBU to think this is ridiculously pretentious?

Mind you, where I'm from we have a chain of shops called Boyes, and pronunciation fluctuates between "boy-ziz" and "boy-ez".

I don't think we have Target (economical department store) in the UK, but friends in Canada and Australia both refer jokingly to it with a French accent - "tarjay" which cracks me up.

mimsy the Boy-ziz thing is just odd isn't it, some people have always called it that since the 80's, very odd. I think its because we might say Marks-iz for M&S and so Boyes is the same for some reason

It's like Essex folk taking the piss out of Vange and Pitsea, it's really hard to type the faux posh pronounciation of them but needless to say it's the polar opposite to the actual way of saying it and they really aren't posh areas!

ha we used to refer to Seacombe (run down bit of Merseyside) 'Sea - a - combee' rather than 'sea-com' - but it was more of a piss take than a serious attempt to poshify ourselves!
