To have no sympathy with Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee for having their house flooded

I feel more sorry for people in council housing along the river than multi millionaires who can CHOOSE where to live.

If you buy a multi million pound house by the river thames then you should not be surprised if it gets flooded. I don't agree with the idea of dredging the river thames as I feel it would destroy wild life.

I agree with them that planning permission should not be given for properties that are guarenteed to flood. Or if people must build on the flood plain then the houses should be built on stilts so that the occupants stay dry. My parents' house is on the flood plain and it is built two feet off the ground so reduce the chances of getting flooded.

You aren't obliged to feel sorry for anyone, but I don't see why they aren't as deserving of sympathy as anyone else who has had their home flooded.

It's a horrible experience for anyone to go through, there is no need to turn it into a competition over who deserves the most sympathy.

Considering that people do pay millions to live near the river, I'd think that anyone who is lucky enough to get a secure tenancy near it at an affordable price is generally quite lucky, and the flooding that they experience is no worse than that experienced by anyone else.

I have had water damage twice in the last 2 years (not flood, burst pipes), so clean water. I cannot imagine what it is like for anyone to have to cope with dirty water sloshing about their homes.

planning permission should not be given for properties that are guaranteed to flood. But they are not guaranteed to flood, are they? Most years there are no problems at all. We have just been through the wettest Dec and Jan in 100 years and houses built 50 years ago wouldn't really have had an inkling about global warming etc. It is a rare event - granted, one that we may see more and more of in the future but without a crystal ball it couldn't have been predicted and is very far from being 'guaranteed'.

By your reasoning, large swathes of London are untenable. Without the barrier, west London would be under water as that whole area is a flood plain.

I feel sympathy with all those who've been flooded. The attitude that rich people don't deserve sympathy is rubbish. However, I never liked Paul Daniels. Couldn't he magic it away then?

I feel sorry for any one flooded.

But I do feel sorry for them because have put in flood defenses to protect their home. When they were flooded last time they wanted to rebuild their house with a new lower level so if it did happen they would not be so effected, but it was refused as it would 'spoil' the look of the area. So they have built a sump with pump under the patio to help.

So what are they supposed to do if the local council, environment agency are not giving home owners permission to rebuild and protect themselves.
