Every time I hear Robson Green or Donna Air speak I think 'hmmmmmm, pretty sure that accent is a recent addiction'.

Sarah Harding from Girls Aloud is the same....one second she was northern, the next she was mockney/a bit posh.

Sarah Harding is actually from the south. I think it's a shame people feel the need to water down their accents because people are snobby about Northern accents.

I've just checked wiki (sad) it says she was born in Berkshire, and raised in Surrey and then Manchester. So maybe that would explain the different accents?

I just remember Sarah Harding have a proper northern accent, had no idea where else she lived. I might have watched Peter Andre and Katie Prices wedding the other day off the back of the PA thread on here , and Sarah harding was bridesmaid - she had a northern accent then.

I'm a southerner who lived in the north for many years. Now I'm back in the south, my 'northern' accent comes out when I speak to people from Lancashire. My colleagues think it's hysterical.

So maybe their accents are changing because they are spending more time in the south?

Would gladly send Jeff Brazier to the north to change his accent. DH can't understand him.

Really all of them? [Hmm] historically speaking it's people in the south "who changed their accents" to imitate the continent and the French Court and the nobility who came back from it with different accents.

Any way I think it's a fairly common occurrence to have your accent affected by where you live and the people around you. Mines odd from moving around and I'm desperate for it not to become lazy like the regional dialect I'm now surrounded by (friends and people I meet from this area all say it's a lazy accent too )

BTW that doesn't mean I think southerners have French accents just that a desire to social climb meant that people tried to imitate something that they thought sounded better educated and "posher"

Obviously I was referring to people from TV land, people whose voices I've actually heard. I can't think of anyone has adopted an affected Northern accent.

Sometimes northern presenters can get quite a hard time where their accent is concerned.
I don't know her name, but the business presenter on bbc breakfast took quite a lot of stick for having a geordie accent. It was suggested that she couldn't possibly be intelligent with that accent. What are people thinking when they come out with crap like that?

Yes, she grew up around the corner from me in Bury. Certainly didn't sound posh back in the day. I've lived in London and then the Home Counties for years now and still have my Lancashire twangs. She's tried hard to lose it

I have just watched today's This Morning on ITVplayer as I wanted to hear Gove, so listened out for Suzanne Shaw. OK, so I admit I don't know her and assume she was the woman doing quiz thing voice-over/ win lots of stuff thing? I really can't hear what's so wrong with her accent though? She just sounds sort of neutral to me, a sort of northern neutral. Am I missing something here?

YABVU to want to listen to Gove. Anyone who can listen to him for more than 30 seconds without feeling the need to throw things at him is very unreasonable indeed.
