Told ''my fault'" by checkout lady

She told me "it's not my fault it's taking so long". I said "nor mine".. She said "isn't it?"!!!! (I was going to add 'these must be v faffy to do, this will teach me to do baking)' ..Had vouchers from shops own supplement for baking. Used them, she apologised every 30 seconds to two other customers for it taking 'so long' ( I had a full basket). I had packed up the wrong almonds (Same packaging).. And went back v quickly to swap as she had already swiped voucher.

Was so upset as a customer two behind was really arsy too and another old couple left and then the lady kept glaring back at me.

I chose a quiet time, 9am tues, and put voucher with relevant products ..

Didn't even take that long but she was so busy apologising to the two people waiting.
Still Can't believe how rude she was and how small she made me feel for using vouchers. Really passive agressive in the 'isn't it' accusation.

I complained at customer services but wondered if everyone agrees this comment was quite foul?

She was out of order.
You are a customer and she should not be rude to you under any circumstances.

No it was very rude. You were within your rights to complain. What supermarket was it? I bet I can guess..

She was rude and deserved a complaint. She should also have asked for a runner to go and get the correct package for you to save time .

I would also complain to head office .There are some training issues at this store I think.

Tesco's or ASDA?

Wow that's so rude! Well done you for complaining at customer services, but please name and shame on here too. Particularly as it's a store run promotion - don't they want people to use the vouchers?! If it meant there was more of a queue they should have opened more checkouts.

This is what I don't like about the uk.. Really rubbish customer service. Name and shame!

Very rude. I always queue up knowing that I may get held up, or that I may hold someone else up. I don't understand why people get arsey in queues.

The cashier sounds like a cow too. Glad you complained.

Was it Sainsburys?

She was very rude and unprofessional. She was right to apologise to the other customers, but she shouldn't have blamed you.

What a miserable old cow. Go on tell us the store!

She was downright rude. I'm an area manager in retail, have worked every position there is from stock monkey to sales assistant to senior store management, etc. If I had spoken to a customer like that at any point, I would have, at the least, been spoken to severely, and some companies would have hauled me up in front of a disciplinary panel.

Perhaps she was having a bad day, etc, but it is no excuse for that behaviour towards a decent customer.

You did the right thing to complain.

Yes she was rude. What did Customer Services say?

That was very rude of her. Reminds me of a rather snotty lady in a shop near me. I realised, as I was about to pay, that I hadn't bought enough money. She said, somewhat snippily, "Well, I'll just have to put that back then". Silly old trout.

She was very rude to you. She could think that if she liked but she shouldn't have suggested it was your fault. The fact that she kept apologising to the next customers in line suggests that she felt quite pressured by their presence.

very rude. If a shop want to make customers feel like crap for using vouchers then they shouldn't issue vouchers. Ditto restaurants who do a Groupon deal and then make people feel like scroungers for using it.

Though I will add, when I worked on a checkout I was told by a customer that I personally should pay for her dry cleaning because her top to toe smart black outfit got plaster dust all over it when she picked up... a bag of plaster. Confused
I told her, politely, that it was quite natural for a bag of plaster to be quite messy to handle.

She complained. Some customers are unreasonable!

It was waitrose.

The manager was fab. He happened to be at customer services and was horrified.

I felt so outnumbered by the older other customers and her.

He said he'd deal and I'm glad, but still chewing it over, hence on here. God knows how 'get over it' I'd need to be if he'd been meh or had got someone else. Can't fault his response.

I don't need any encouragement to be self depreciating. Not what you need when ttc age 39 for a not v concerted but still trying five years and af arrives with a vengeance.

I wasn't full of grump tho. She was just freaked out by someone using the coupons. She wasn't as bad as the old crow who moved queues and still kept glaring back at me like the poor relation.

Thanks for the yanbu's. I have worked in shops too and know how aggro customers can be.

Waitrose?! I'd expect a bit more in terms of customer service from that overpriced shithole. It's funny isn't it though isn't it, Iceland has a reputation as being for chavs and the stuff is mostly cheap crap, but the staff are always lovely in there. Helpful and polite.

Just goes to show.

Shock at waitrose!! Their staff are normally so nice. I was buying lots of wine yesterday and the poor cashier had to wait for ages to get it authorised as she was new and hadn't "done the training". She was so flustered and apologetic! Glad you complained - I imagine it's the sort of thing they'd deal with....

I've once (in twenty-odd years of using a Waitrose as my corner shop) had that level of rudeness from a checkout assistant. I'd not seen her before. She also managed to screw up my receipt, and I mentioned she'd not seemed to understand that courtesy is a basic bit of the job when I went to Customer Services to get it sorted out.

I never saw her working there again.

Of shops I regularly use or used in the past, the order of customer service is

Top - Morrisons
Second - Waitrose
Third - Lidl
Fourth - Asda
Fifth - Sainsburys
Sixth and by a very very long way - Tesco.

There are individual staff in all the weaker ones who will go the extra mile etc, but the culture in the bottom three always feels like the customer is always wrong. Just try getting a refund at any of them, you will be treated as a liar until proven otherwise.
